Your Kikuyu lawn doesn’t need the same amount of water in winter as it does during a hot Pretoria summer.

Lower temperatures mean less evaporation and slower lawn growth. During dry periods, one deep watering every one to two weeks is usually enough, depending on rainfall and your local soil conditions. Too much water can leave the soil soggy and encourage fungal problems.

Before switching on the irrigation system, check the soil below the surface. It may still contain more moisture than you expect. When watering is necessary, early morning is best.
