Timber behaves differently in winter. As temperatures drop and moisture rises in the Western Cape, wood absorbs water — swelling, cracking, and eventually peeling any coating that wasn't properly applied.
For exterior timber frames, doors, windows, and decking, here's what to do before the damage starts:
✔ Clean and sand the surface — remove all the old varnish back to the bare wood.
✔ Apply a quality wood preservative — Prominent Paints WoodPro Wood Preservative is formulated for South African conditions
✔ Allow for 3 days drying time between coats and always sand and wipe between coats.
✔ Plan to check it annually — timber needs more attention than masonry
For interior timber in bathrooms and kitchens, moisture-resistant products and correct application are the difference between a 1-year repaint and a 5-year finish.
