Timber behaves differently in winter. As temperatures drop and moisture rises in the Western Cape, wood absorbs water — swelling, cracking, and eventually peeling any coating that wasn't properly applied.

For exterior timber frames, doors, windows, and decking, here's what to do before the damage starts:

✔ Clean and sand the surface — remove all the old varnish back to the bare wood.
✔ Apply a quality wood preservative — Prominent Paints WoodPro Wood Preservative is formulated for South African conditions
✔ Allow for 3 days drying time between coats and always sand and wipe between coats.
✔ Plan to check it annually — timber needs more attention than masonry

For interior timber in bathrooms and kitchens, moisture-resistant products and correct application are the difference between a 1-year repaint and a 5-year finish.

When a project is done right, there's a certificate to prove it.

The Prominent Paints paint film warranty is issued after project completion — validated by an independent, third-party quality assurance company. Prominent Paints then issue the warranty certificate.

For homeowners' associations, commercial property managers, and developers, this is the level of documentation that protects your building and your budget for the long term.

Thinking about freshening up an interior room this winter? Before the brushes come out, here are 5 things worth checking first.

✔ Cracks in the plaster — fill and allow to cure fully before painting. Paint doesn't bridge cracks, it follows them.
✔ Moisture or damp patches — find the source and fix it. Painting over damp never works.
✔ Existing paint condition — if it's flaking or peeling, it needs to come off before the new coat goes on.
✔ Surface cleanliness — grease, dust, and smoke residue all prevent proper adhesion. Clean the wall first.
✔ Primer — on new plaster, repaired areas, or surface colour changes, a quality primer is not optional. Contact Prominent Paints Customer Care on 0861 77 66 46 to ask for guidance on the specific primer to use based on the surface conditions.

Get these right and your topcoat will do its job properly.

Choosing the wrong primer is one of the most common — and costly — paint mistakes.

Here's a simple guide to get it right:

WATER-BASED PRIMER
Best for: New interior plaster that is dry, ceiling stains, most interior surfaces
Benefits: Lower VOC, faster drying, easy cleanup
Prominent Paints Ultra Prime is our benchmark for alkali-resistant applications on interior substrates or on Chromadek Roof Sheets/cladding that will be painted for the first time.

SOLVENT-BASED PRIMER
Best for: New Exterior unpainted plaster, timber, surfaces with existing oil-based coatings
Benefits: Superior adhesion on porous or non-porous and problem substrates

Not sure which one you need? Ask at your nearest Prominent Paints branch — we'll point you in the right direction.

Youth Day — The Trade Needs Its Next Generation

Fifty years ago, the youth of 1976 changed the course of this country. Youth Day is a moment to honour that courage — and to ask what we're building for the young people coming through now.

In the painting trade, the answer matters. Every well-prepped wall, every coating system applied right, every project that doesn't need a callback — that's skill. And skill has to be taught, passed on, and invested in.

That's why skills development sits at the centre of how Prominent Paints supports the industry. Through the Training Academy, young painters and applicators learn the fundamentals properly: surface preparation, product knowledge, and application technique. The things that turn a job into a career.

To every young South African picking up a brush, a roller, or a spray gun for the first time — this industry needs you.

Spending more time at home this winter? Here are three rooms worth refreshing — and the Colours of Home palettes that work best in each.

LOUNGE: Deep, grounded tones — warm terracotta, burnt ochre, or a rich olive — make a living room feel intentional and cosy. One feature wall is all it takes.

BEDROOM: Quiet, muted tones — soft sage, dusty lilac, or warm greige — create the calm that makes a bedroom feel like a retreat rather than just a place to sleep.

STUDY OR HOME OFFICE: A deep, focused colour — charcoal, navy, or forest green — gives a workspace a sense of purpose. You'll feel the difference in how you use the room.

All Colours of Home palettes are available at your nearest Prominent Paints branch. Ask our team to help you choose.

Seen damp or water staining on your walls? Before you reach for the paint, stop.

Dampness is not a paint problem — it is a moisture problem. Painting over it without fixing the source will make it worse, not better.

Here is the correct order of action:

1. Find the source. Roof leak, burst pipe, rising damp, or exterior wall pe*******on.
2. Fix it properly. No coating holds on an actively wet substrate.
3. Let the surface dry fully. This can take days or even weeks depending on severity.
4. Apply the correct primer. On cement plaster, Prominent Paints Damp Cure delivers the alkali resistance and adhesion your topcoat needs.
5. Apply the right topcoat for the surface and environment.

Not sure which system to use? Visit your nearest Prominent Paints branch — our team will advise you correctly.
