Introducing House Tranquility
Boggomsbaai, Western Cape
Where Coastal Living Finds Its Rhythm

Set along the rugged fynbos slopes overlooking Vleesbaai, House Tranquility rises from the landscape with a quiet confidence. The coastline, the migrating whales, and the shifting colours of the sunrise, these elements shaped every line, material choice, and spatial decision in this unique coastal residence.

Positioned to capture uninterrupted 180-degree ocean vistas, the home embraces its east-facing orientation, welcoming in morning light and framing the ever-changing sea. Conceived as both a part-time retreat and a comfortable base for everyday living, it embodies our client’s wish for a space that is uncomplicated, enduring, and deeply connected to its natural surroundings.

The architectural language blends the familiar warmth of Cape vernacular forms with a refined, modern sensibility. Durable finishes, simple geometries, and a strong, sustainable framework all support the home’s biophilic design principles, creating an environment that feels grounded, calming, and authentic to its place.

Inside, the heart of the home is an open-plan living space that flows toward the horizon. Kitchen, dining, lounge, and a traditional braai niche come together in one generously lit volume, where sunlight and coastal views shape the daily experience.

Each bedroom wing has been crafted with intention:
•The primary wing holds two spacious en-suite rooms, both catching the gentle northern and eastern light.
•The guest wing mirrors the ocean-facing views and functions flexibly, fully connected for family stays, yet self-contained enough to operate as an independent suite when needed.

Behind its serene presence lies a thoughtful system of sustainable technologies:
• Solar generation with battery backup for energy independence
• Rainwater collection and mechanical ventilation for clean, efficient airflow and water use
• A concealed service core that organises all technical systems out of sight
• A sheltered internal courtyard that introduces fresh air, daylight, passive cooling, and a calm outdoor refuge protected from coastal winds

Despite the site’s steep 9.2m fall, the home settles organically into the terrain, balancing landscape, structure, and the rhythm of coastal weather. The result is our signature interpretation of CapeScandi: clean modernity softened by nature, simplicity enriched by context.

Architecture becomes its strongest when it listens.
At Green Block Architects, we design buildings that respond to climate, to people, and to the environments they inhabit.

House Tranquillity: A Coastal Home Rooted in Place
Boggomsbaai, Western Cape

Resting along the fynbos-covered cliffs of the Western Cape, House Tranquillity is a refined expression of coastal living, shaped by nature. Every detail, from the building's orientation to the material palette, was carefully crafted to honour the landscape, the shifting ocean light, and the peaceful rhythm of Vleesbaai.

This east-facing residence captures sweeping 180-degree sea views and is designed as a hybrid: a calm everyday home with the flexibility of a holiday retreat. Guided by sustainable design principles and our signature CapeScandi approach, the architecture reflects simplicity, longevity and a seamless connection to the surrounding environment.

Inside the living spaces open fully toward the horizon, uniting the kitchen, dining room, lounge and a traditional braai hearth into one light-filled volume. Large openings frame the coastline like a living artwork, while natural finishes and clean lines create a grounded, restorative atmosphere.

Two independent sleeping wings enhance comfort and privacy.
The primary wing includes two generous en-suite bedrooms warmed by northern and eastern light.
The guest wing offers the same ocean-facing serenity and can operate as part of the home or as a self-contained rental suite.

Designed for Sustainable, Off-Grid Living
Beneath the tranquil aesthetic lies a robust green infrastructure engineered for coastal conditions:
* Solar power with battery storage for energy security
* Rainwater harvesting and mechanical ventilation for clean,
efficient circulation
* A discreet service zone that houses all sustainable systems
* A wind-protected internal courtyard providing passive cooling,
natural light and a private outdoor escape.

Despite the site’s challenging 9.2m incline, the home settles naturally into the terrain, balancing form, function and landscape. It represents our commitment to architecture that listens to climate, context and the people who inhabit the space.

At Green Block Architects, we believe sustainable coastal homes should inspire, regenerate and deepen our connection to nature.

24/10/2025

We are deeply honoured and incredibly grateful to share that Green Block Architects has been voted Pretoria’s Best Architect in the 2025 Best of Pretoria Readers’ Choice Awards!

This recognition is more than an award; it’s a heartfelt tribute to our clients, friends, families, and community who continue to believe in us. Your support, trust, and votes made this moment possible.

Architecture is about the people who live, work, and thrive in the spaces we create, not just the biggest projects or awards. It’s about making sure every client feels truly valued, cared for, and confident that they’ve received the best possible design and value for their investment.

From the first concept sketch to the day we hand over the keys, every project we undertake is a comprehensive journey. We believe that true success lies in the experience, in how our clients feel throughout the process, and in the positive impact our work has on their lives.

This award is proof that a small, passionate, sustainability-driven team can stand tall among the biggest firms — not by competing in scale, but by excelling in care, creativity, and connection.

With gratitude,
Lukas Meyer and
The Green Block Architects Team
