Geography Awareness Week is a time to celebrate the significance of our planet's diverse landscapes and ecosystems. One critical aspect of our geographical understanding is the role of forestry monitoring through remote sensing and GIS programs.

These technologies enable us to keep a watchful eye on our forests, tracking changes in tree cover, biodiversity, and land use.

With the power of satellite imagery and geographic information systems (GIS), we can assess the health of forests, detect deforestation, and manage resources more effectively. By promoting these cutting-edge tools during Geography Awareness Week, we underscore the vital importance of sustainable forestry practices and the role of geography in preserving our world's precious natural resources.

Assessing the economic value of timber stands is crucial for making profitable decisions in commercial forestry and managing the delicate balance between supply and demand. The value of timber stands is influenced by market prices, timber quality, access and logistics such as road quality and weather, and environmental factors.

We explore these influences in more detail here:

What is forest inventory?

Simply put, it’s the process of systematically collecting data on the health of a forest, including its composition and structure. Data is collected in several ways – from sampling forest plots to gather specific tree data, to measuring vegetation, site conditions such as soil variation and evaluating pests and environmental stressors.

All of this serves to enhance forest management practices. Learn more about forest inventory here:

The combination of stand establishment and regeneration enables sustainable timber management practices.

By carefully planning and implementing harvesting activities while simultaneously replanting or regenerating the harvested areas, the forest ecosystem can maintain its productivity and continue to provide timber resources for the long term without depleting the forest.

Stand establishment refers to the intentional creation of new forest stands, often through planting or seeding, with the aim of replenishing harvested or degraded areas. This process plays a vital role in maintaining sustainable timber production and ecosystem services. Regeneration is the natural or artificial renewal of forest vegetation after disturbance, such as harvesting or natural disasters, and is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

However, deforestation disrupts this cycle by clearing vast areas of forest for various purposes, leading to a loss of mature stands, hindering natural regeneration, and often replacing forests with non-forest land uses.

Consequently, deforestation poses significant threats to biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and the overall health of ecosystems, emphasizing the need for responsible stand establishment and regeneration practices to counteract the adverse effects of deforestation and promote sustainable forest management.

Silviculture practices have evolved over time to address the challenges of sustainable forest management and changing societal demands. Modern silviculture emphasizes the integration of ecological principles, economic viability, and social considerations to ensure the long-term health and productivity of forests.

By implementing sound silvicultural practices, foresters can optimise timber production, conserve biodiversity, protect ecosystem services, and contribute to the sustainable use of forest resources.

Our Tree Count module provides valuable information regarding various aspects.

Firstly, it reveals the number of trees planted in all young compartments until the point of canopy closure, allowing us to determine the density of stems per hectare in these compartments. It also has the capability to detect any instances of tree mortality that may have occurred between counts.

Secondly, it offers access to both historical and current imagery, enabling us to compare and analyze changes over time. Thirdly, it assigns a unique identification and precise location to each individual tree, facilitating accurate tracking and management.

Furthermore, it provides insights into the average health status of both individual trees and the compartments as a whole at the time the imagery was captured. Lastly, it utilises the imagery to identify and assess the alignment and spacing of tree planting rows, aiding in the evaluation of planting techniques.

What are tree compartments?

Compartments are designated areas within a forest that are managed separately. Think of them as individual sections within the larger forest. These compartments are defined based on factors like size, ecological characteristics, and management goals. They play a vital role in planning and executing tree planting efforts.
