A few plants that you can begin planting, to establish flowers for the winter, are Petunias, Penstemons and Gazanias. These flowers look good in pot plants and will bring a pop of colour to your garden.

Petunias look beautiful in containers/potplants, as they trail beautifully. They will, therefore, hang out of your pot-plants and hangers, creating an โ€˜overflowโ€™ look. Petunia plants can survive for around 2 years (perennials) in the colder regions of KZN.

Penstemons need well-drained soil and full or half sun. These flowers are bell-shaped and are a beautiful variety of colours. They are often split into two colours, or gradually fade from one colour to another.

Gazanias form in clumps and therefore look great in potplants, bunched up with lots of different colours. Gazanias are also perennials, bringing long-lasting joy from their beautiful colours, however, they need sunlight as their flowers close when in the shade.

Tag us in pictures of your beautiful autumn and winter blooms once they have established, and in any posts of plant progress using our Organic for Africa growing mediums. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒผ

With Autumn fast approaching, its time to get mulching!

Pictured here is the lovely indigenous Chlorophytum comosum (commonly called hen-and-chicks, or spider plant), sitting comfortably in a shade bed, well protected with a layer of premium Pine Bark Mulch by Organic for Africa.

Not only does mulch add an aesthetic appeal to your garden beds and containers, it has a multitude of benefits for overall soil health, and the growing conditions of your plants.

As well as insulating the soil surface, reducing evaporation and increasing moisture absorption, mulching prevents soil compaction, erosion, and loss of topsoil.

Over time, consistent use of mulch improves soil structure and overall fertility, creating an environment for insect, earthworm, fungi and microbial populations to thrive, aerating the soil and aiding in the breakdown of organic matter.

A well mulched garden becomes a pantry of insects for birds, reptiles and amphibians. Mulch acts as a natural ground cover, slowing the proliferation of weeds, and gives planting beds a uniformed, well-cared for look.

You know it's mid-summer when the gorgeous Eucomis blooms are showing off!

These indigenous bulbs have the common name of Pineapple Lily- although they are in no way related to pineapples.

The name Eucomis is derived from the Greek word Euckomos, meaning โ€˜beautiful hair' or 'top-knot'- referring to the tuft of foliage at the top of the flower stalks.

Kniphofias are such a rewarding indigenous species to grow, and make a real statement when planted en masse! These beauties attract insects and butterflies, as well as Sunbirds to the garden.

Lockdown Lawn Care

If you are fortunate enough to have your own yard during the lockdown, chances are your lawn is looking more like a jungle than the manicured patch of green it normally is. I have noticed on my odd trip to stock up on supplies for home, that many home owners are leaving their lawns to get long and then giving them a harsh short cut! This results in scalping of the lawn causing dry brown patches; and although this may practically seem like a good idea, it can unfortunately cause damage to the lawn - especially just before the onset of winter.

Proper lawn care requites frequent cutting at least once a week to maintain a healthy lush lawn, and stand the turf in good stead for the upcoming winter months. If you lawn has been neglected and allowed to grow too long, the best way to get it back into shape is to raise the mowing height on the lawnmower two to three settings; then gradually lower the mowing height with each consecutive cut, preferably every 5 -7 days. Make sure that the grass catch is fitted on the mower and that excess lawn clippings are raked up after mowing to prevent burning and bald patches on the lawn

So fantastic to see so much wildlife making Fresh Landscaping's nursery their home! It's great to see the birds nesting in our large bagged trees, as well as this spotted bush snake doing the rounds. The Cape Wagtails are currently sitting on two eggs and the Black-eyed Bulbul and Fork-tailed Drongos are both currently raising chicks in their nests! http://freshlandscaping.co.za
