Zambian Ambassador to the United States of America Chibamba Kanyama has expressed confidence in the Smart City project that is being undertaken by the Bridge Consortium.

Speaking during the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Bridge Consortium Limited and Charter Cities Institute Ambassador Kanyama commended the two companies for the step taken to collaborate.

Ambassador Kanyama indicated to the two companies that Zambia regarded the Diaspora as its 11th province and is keen on having them participate in the economic development of the country through different ventures.

In a statement issued by the Zambian Embassy in Washington, he urged them to ensure that the honey from the silta plantation is processed as a finished product, well packaged and in quantities to be possibly supplied to the American market.

The Bridge Consortium founder and group executive Chairman Gaius King said the project would address the deficit gaps that exist between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He added that the project was driven by patriotism and it would ensure that it is the backbone of industrialization.

"This project is an opportunity to unlock the potential that Zambia has, and create wealth as the country is opened up to other neighboring countries considering that Zambia was land-linked and well positioned in the region," said Mr. King.

Mr. King highlighted the benefits of Silta forestry plantations, which included land reclamation, carbon trading, job creation, enhancement of the green economy, enhancement of Small and Medium Enterprises, and transfer of skills and wealth creation.

Meanwhile, Charter Cities Institute Executive Director Kurtis Lockhart said the institute had chosen to partner with the Bridge Consortium because of its innovative thinking, entrepreneurship, and transformation ambition of a new city development in North-Western Province.

"This model if successful in Zambia, could be used as a model across the continent with countries who were grappling with such issues," said Lockhart.

The MoU was signed at the Zambian Embassy in Washington DC and it will provide an environment for the Charter Cities Institute to convene key stakeholders and investors to partner with the Bridge Consortium Limited to support 56 Beehive farmers with an estimated 1,200 beehives and to produce 48,000 Kgs of honey a year whilst creating several permanent jobs over 20 years through the silta forestry plantations located in Manyinga District, North-Western Province.

BREAKING NEWS: The Bridge Consortium breaks into the US honey market

Locally produced North West honey from the Silta Forestry Plantation in Mayinga District has accessed foreign markets in the United States of America.

Speaking in an interview in Mayinga, The Bridge Consortium Project Manager for Climate Change, Farming and Natural Resources Mr Molton Munyenyembe said this is the step in the right direction that will enable the Zambian-produced product to have to access international markets.

Mr Munyenyembe, says the company is working with about 24 out-growers to grow the sector and create efficiency in the production of honey with a goal to attract 56 out growers by the end of the year.

β€œAs a sustainable company, we are working in line with the Eighth National Development Plan (8th NDP) to diversify the economy. The honey sub sector is among the other priority areas which have been pointed out by government to drive the diversification agenda,” said Mr Munyenyembe.

He explained that the consortium is also working with other sector players such as cooperating partners to provide technical assistance for the out-growers in the honey sector in order to boost their capacity to satisfy both the local and international markets.

And Mr Munyenyembe also disclosed that the consortium is working with communities to use honey as an alternative source of livelihood away from charcoal burning and deforestation activities.

He emphasised that the opportunities for bee keeping and agriculture in general in Zambia are immense due to the favorable climatic conditions.

Another win for Nature

10 sustainably beehives built from timber off cuts have successfully hanged today at the Silta Forestry Plantation (The conservation division of the Bridge Consortium) in Mayinga, Zambia.

Because of the massive logging of trees, Mayinga District is one of most deforestated districts in Zambia. The Silta Forestry Plantation is geared towards providing relief to the environment.

Off cuts from the timber concession holders are channelled towards sustainable development through climate resilience methods of preserving Trees.

10 out the 100 beehives earmarked to be put up every mouth will directly curtail the cutting down of trees and will offer an alternative source of living for the communities.

The importance of bees is enormous, among others, Bees act as;

1. As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth and preservation of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small.

2. Bees contribute to complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to co-exist

3. The vast majority of plant species-- almost 90%, in fact-- rely on pollinators to reproduce. This means bees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat, according to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University.

In the next 11 mouths, the Silta Forestry Plantation will be home to over 1,200 bee hives with an estimated annual out of 48,000 kilograms & hundreds of kilograms of honey wax.

This will creates hundreds of jobs along the value chain, support additional bee outgrowers, transfer critical sustainable skills, transfer wealth & avert the massacre of trees and the environment.

The Bridge Consortium is committed towards sustainable infrastructure development towards economical industrialisation of Africa.

A few weeks ago, Gaius King ( Founder of β€œThe Bridge Consortium”) presented at Zambia’s largest property conference on the topic, β€œLeveraging Border Cities for Sustainable Economic Development”

We, later on joined an astute panel represented by:

1. One of Zambia's finest veteran architects Dr Francis Ndilila - Principal Architect, Ndilila Architects, and Project Managers
2. Mwanda Phiri: Africa Lead - Chatter Cities Institute
3. Simon Gouweloos: Senior Transactor and Team leader: Real Estate Finance, Standard Bank

The panel was moderated by Zambia's property and real estate realtors representative Mr Tim Ware, MD Knight Frank.

Key Highlights:

* Zambia has a strategic prime geo-economic location in Sub-saharan Africa, with land linked to 8 African countries - Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, and water linked to Rwanda, and Burundi.

* Opening up of the Lobito Corridor is of utmost importance as a trade enabler for the region, particularly between Zambia, DR Congo, Angola, and Central Africa at large. The corridor offers up to 1,146 km shorter haulage as an alternative route to the Walvis Bay Corridor and South African ports.

* The Lobito Corridor provides an important gateway for industrial and agricultural goods produced in Central and Southern Africa, and the Bridge Consortium Smart (Green) Border City is positioned to become a conduit that will enable Zambia especially the North Western part benefit from the economic and developmental benefits of the corridor.

* The corridor offers shorter and hence faster access for exports to and imports from Europe, South & North America and supporting this corridor with critical infrastructure such as well organised sustainable cities and farm blocks is of paramount economic importance.

*Shared insights and examples on how well organised border cities such as Mongolia-China, Elpaso on US-Mexico Border, Vancouver and El-savado have driven growth in trade and economic development of respective countries and border cities.

* Bringing it home, Africa has ten national capitals that are located at a national border: Bangui, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Gaborone, Kinshasa, LomΓ©, Maseru, Mbabane, Ndjamena & Porto Novo.

* We concluded by pointing out on the social and economical effects/impacts of the Gabriel King Smart City that will be located long the Lobito Corridor. Chief among them is that the City will serve as an access point for trade between Zambia, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Improving existing border cities and building new cities is importance for the foreseeable future.

Many thanks to all who have been a part of this journey.

Tim Ware, Managing Director Zambia, Knight Frank, Mwanda Phiri (Africa Lead Chatter Cities Institute), Simon Gouweloos (Senior Transactor and Team leader: Real Estate Finance, Standard Bank) and Dr. Francis Ndilila (Principal Architect, Ndilila Architects and Project Managers).

Planting with a Purpose: Indigenous trees, fruit trees and bee keeping

At the Silta Nursery Plantation, we Plant with a Purpose. Our focus is to replenish the forest plantations with not only indigenous forest trees, but also indigenous fruit trees such and other organic fruit trees to provide food for our local people.

So far, we have over 3,000 indigenous trees and fruit trees. We are preparing to plant over 130,000 trees this year.

We believe in creating and getting value from the forest in a sustainable manner. As a source of livelihood for our local communities in Manyinga, we have partnered with locals to undertake bee keeping & tree planting.

Our target is to populate 1,200 beehives, with a beehive production of 100 beehives per month.

Bee keeping in these forest will also serve the purpose of preventing deforestation.

12/01/2023

Soil is the foundation of our agricultural systems, and is essential for growing healthy crops. Climate change is impacting the health of our soils, making it more difficult to grow crops and sustain our agricultural systems.

However, there are ways to help mitigate the effects of climate change on our soils. By implementing sustainable farming practices, such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and no-till farming, we can help protect our soils and ensure that they remain healthy and productive for years to come.

We believe that with the right strategies, we can ensure that our soils remain a reliable source of food, even in the face of a changing climate.
