MEAN - Middle East Architecture Network MEAN* Is an Innovative Architecture Practice MEAN* Is an Innovative Architecture Practice that works at the nexus of design and emergent technologies.

Since its inception in 2016, MEAN* has developed projects of varying scales and functions. The overarching theme of the work produced by MEAN* responds to the contemporary context of the Middle East, developing a site-specific, native architectural language in juxtaposition to avant-garde technologies. MEAN* utilizes cutting-edge computational design processes and digital fabrication tools to leverage the quality of architectural solutions. Our mission is to amalgamate computation, material research, and digital fabrication, to provide interdisciplinary solutions that respond to current economic, environmental, and social challenges. MEAN* worked on projects ranging from large public buildings, residential, retail to small experimental structures and products. Most of which had been praised by international awards and publications for the innovative approach taken to materiality, fabrication methods, and outstanding design quality. A major focus in the body of work at MEAN* remains rooted in the preservation of the character, ecology, and history of the locale, while projecting towards a globalized future. We aim to produce contemporary, visionary, and world-class architecture -with a vernacular mindset.

A playground you can walk under: one shell, 715 m² of ground, five ways to play.

DMCC asked MEAN* how a playground could carry the Uptown Dubai identity and still be good for children. We designed it as architecture, a single continuous landscape where shelter, ground and play are one thing.

A freeform catenary shell covers 85% of the site, about 600 m² of shade over 715 m² of ground, 8.5 m high at its peak and free of columns. Underneath, the ground folds into five zones: jumping, climbing, balancing, sensory and imaginative play, and a social and rest area with open sightlines for guardians.

Two material routes are on the table. Fibreglass-reinforced shotcrete with a coloured natural clay finish, or 3D-printed PETG panels on a steel grid. EPDM impact flooring runs throughout to EN 1177 and ASTM F1292, and every play element meets EN 1176 and ASTM F1487.

Members Club & Fashion Incubator, Dubai. Five concrete buildings around a pool, built from three precast modules.

MEAN* drew up this proposal as a calm place for people in fashion to meet and work together. A reception with a shop, a restaurant and bar, a gym, a four-storey boutique hotel and the incubator stand around the pool.

All five are assembled from the same three precast pieces: a column, a half arch and a solid block, each 250 mm thick. Stacked and repeated, they make the arches and round openings you see inside and out, and the concrete is left exposed.

The single-storey buildings have roofs for seating and planting. A bridge crosses the rooftops to link all five and shades anyone walking underneath. In the incubator, the mezzanine can double as a runway for the designs made there.

PUFF x Barry’s Kiosk, Nikki Beach Marbella.

A droplet clad in bottle holders 3D printed from recycled plastic.

For Barry’s summer residency at Nikki Beach, Puff ™💧 needed one small kiosk to display its bottles, sell them and personalise them on the spot. MEAN* took the form from the PUFF water drop, so the kiosk reads as a droplet in plan and rises around a curved yellow counter where guests added charms to their bottles or had a name engraved.

Each 3D-printed holder carries one bottle, and the holders stack up to form the outer wall. LAMÁQUINA printed them in Barcelona from recycled PLA pellets, along with the top as a single piece. Blue CNC-cut timber ribs hold them from behind, and a yellow shelving tower beside the kiosk carries the rest of the range.

Built as a kit of parts, pre-assembled in Barcelona and put together on site in Marbella, it can come apart for use at future activations. From brief to opening, the project took about a month.

Which bottle would you have taken off the wall?

A.R.M. Majlis Pavilion, Art Dubai 2026. Unbuilt proposal, part 1 of 2.

MEAN* proposed this temporary majlis to A.R.M. Holding for Art Dubai’s 20th edition at Madinat Jumeirah. The massing starts from the site outline and is cut back to open routes for movement and arrival. Reception leads into the 90 m² HUNA Lounge (Huna) and the 135 m² A.R.M. Majlis, and the circulation diagram traces separate routes for visitors and staff.

🏆 Gold — FRAME Awards

Repeat Wellness Club has won Gold in the Wellness Space category at the FRAME Awards.

Set within a protected 19th-century building in Barcelona’s Eixample, the project absorbs the constraints of its historic envelope — local planning required the façade to remain untouched — transforming a fragmented, irregular ground-floor unit into a continuous interior for movement, recovery, and pause.

Thank you to FRAME and the jury, and to our clients, collaborators, consultants, makers, and construction team.
