This MWW Special Collection of 500 paintings presents some of finest achievements of Western Art from 1300 to 1900. Along with its companion gallery on Modern Art, it aims to give the viewer/reader a comprehensive picture of the development of the art of painting from the early Italian Renaissance to the present day.
All the images are accompanied by comments, mostly original, which give detailed background on the artist, work and period in question. You will need to click on "See More" to the right of the full-screen image to read these.
The works are arranged chronological order, with the earliest ones first. This gallery of paintings with their accompanying commentary should be able to function as an online art history text for secondary school and university students who can read English.
The gallery is now complete. Some of the pictures will be included in the new MWW Artwork of the Day gallery. Feel free to download the full-size images to your computer (right-click and save as...). They make good backgrounds and screensavers.
