BASEHABITAT INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL 2025 – it’s a wrap! ☀️

We spent two unforgettable weeks at the BASEhabitat Summer School in Kuchl, Austria, alongside participants and partners from over 40 countries around the globe—an inspiring deep dive into sustainable architecture, crafts, and community. 🛠️🌱

From hands-on building experiences with earth, straw and reed, to learning and drawing inspiration from architects, artists and craftspeople, this experience was all about mutual exchange and connecting within the international community in an engaging and creative learning space. 🛠️

During the summer school programme, we got our hands (very) dirty in four hands-on workshops: Rammed Earth, Adobe, Earth & Fibers and Straw & Reed.

Each material taught us something different—not just about building, but about patience, collaboration, adaptation to weather conditions and ultimately, respect for our environment.

A huge thanks to the passionate workshop instructors, our guest lecturers, our hosts, sponsors, partners and all participants from around the world – and last but not least, to the BASEhabitat team for creating such a thoughtful, hands-on, and unforgettable experience. 💛 See you again at our next International Summer School in 2027!

STRAW & REED WORKSHOP | BASEhabitat Summer School 2025
Kuchl, Austria | July 6–20, 2025

🤝 The Straw & Reed workshop focused on natural insulation and traditional thatching—two time-tested techniques with renewed relevance in sustainable construction. Participants worked with straw bales as a high-performing, low-impact building component and learned to thatch using locally sourced reed.

🌾 Over the course of the workshop led by experts Angelo Ferrara and Christian Ditlefsen (.dk), students gained practical experience in shaping and fixing straw bales, installing them as wall infill, and exploring their thermal and ecological benefits. In parallel, they practiced reed thatching for roofing and vertical applications—a craft rooted in centuries of vernacular knowledge, but efficiently adapted to contemporary architectural design.

🏠 The workshop demonstrated how renewable, agricultural byproducts can become central elements in building systems that are both efficient, climate-conscious aesthetically attractive.

🌞We extend our gratitude to the instructors and students for keeping this vital knowledge alive and evolving.

EARTH & FIBRES WORKSHOP | BASEhabitat Summer School 2025
Kuchl, Austria | July 6–20, 2025

🌾In the Earth & Fibers one-week intensive workshop, participants explored how plant-based fibres can enhance earth mixtures properties and generate creative surfaces and objects. This workshop invited to sensoric experimentation, bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship, artistic exploration and experimental design.

🤝Led by experienced trainers Becky Little () and François Streiff, the group developed various earth-fibre compositions and applied them in different scales and artistic contexts, from small-scale objects to textured interior surfaces. Working with materials rich in regional identity and heritage, ecological and artistic potential, the international participants gained insight into cob as a building technique and on how natural fibres can transform both the performance and aesthetics of earthen mixtures.

🌞This workshop emphasized the importance of locally available resources, sensory experiences as a learning medium, and regenerative design thinking—inviting a new approach to a sensitive, environmentally responsible architecture. Thank you, Becky and François for sharing your expertise and enthusiasm with us!

ADOBE WORKSHOP | BASEhabitat Summer School 2025
Kuchl, Austria | July 6–20, 2025

🧱 The Adobe workshop challenged the participants to explore one of the oldest and most widespread earth construction techniques. Under expert guidance from amaco team () Franco Noriega & Margot Lacombe, students learned how to create adobe bricks using earth, water, and straw—then used those bricks to create patterns, textures and build full-scale walls.

The process emphasized traditional craftsmanship as well as contemporary innovation in shaping, laying, and finishing. Participants engaged hands-on with bricklaying in generating walls, arches and domes, developed new skills, and discovered how to adapt adobe for both structural and decorative use.

This workshop provided a rich understanding of adobe's durability, versatility, and circularity—demonstrating how this humble material continues to offer elegant, low-impact solutions for contemporary architecture.

🌞Thank you to our instructors and participants for their enthusiasm and commitment to regenerative design and building methods!

RAMMED EARTH WORKSHOP | BASEhabitat Summer School 2025
Kuchl, Austria | July 6–20, 2025

🤝Over the past two weeks, our international participants immersed themselves in the full process of this timeless and sustainable building technique. Guided by experts Dominik Abbrederis () and Max Weidacher, the group explored every stage—from material testing and mixing, to formwork construction and large-scale ramming.

🧱 Together, we built two full-scale rammed earth walls on the Wissenscampus in Kuchl, Austria experiencing firsthand the precision, collaboration, and physical engagement this method requires in order to reach a high-quality design. Through experimentation with various mixtures and layering techniques, participants gained valuable insights into the structural and aesthetic potential of rammed earth as a building material.

🌞A sincere thank you to all who took part in this hands-on collaborative experience—and to our dedicated trainers for sharing their expertise with enthusiasm! We are proud to support a new generation of practitioners committed to building with care, intention, and ecological materials.
