Georg Mähring

Georg Mähring I am a designer and maker of fine furniture. My work ranges from exclusive one off pieces, to large interior contract work and design consultancy.

I strive to create objects of beauty which enrich the lives of my customers for generations to come. I would describe my relationship with the material of wood as a real love affair. The choice of wood for every project takes care and can often involve working closely with you the customer. Since anicent times humans have made their own worktools. I also like to work using my own self made planes,

knives and chisels. This way of working fulfils my need for independence and the ability to produce objects of high quality. From many years of 'hands on' know how, I am also able to use the ancient technique of steambending to good effect. As I have learnt from my Master in England, so I have also passed my skills and knowledge on to younger furniture makers through traditional apprenticeships. I would also be glad to visit after a year to provide aftercare for your furniture, with the natural oils and waxes which I use exclusively on our surfaces.

This is the matching bench for the table we recently built. But this bench isn‘t for the kitchen, our lovely clients wanted it as little highlight for their wardrobe. How do you like it?

A nice table made by and me. It is made out of elm and oak. We love the way the colour of the tabletop shines in the light. It was a little challenging to get this table stable because the tabletop is quite heavy und the underconstruction is really slim. But we are happy with the result!

It is time to update you about who is who in my workshop.

Now Albert Schörkmeier alias is with me full time. Also, Caroline, my wife, alias , is helping whenever a hand is needed.

I have been building furniture as a full time professional now for more than half of my life, for 26 years to be exact. In this time there have been lows when I was close to giving up.

Two things keep me going:
First and above all there is this wonderful material with which I am working. Wood. Sometimes it happens, let’s say I am just fed up with everything, that I pick up this piece of wood, any old scrap really and handle it and look at it, hold it up to the light and forget everything else and get totally immersed in the beauty of this piece of material which has built itself over the course of a lifetime as a tree. Dyes, sugars, all sorts of chemicals, creating this unbelievably varied material. The softness of basswood, oak, the wood of the kings and Queens, pear, and maple, both of which have very female qualities to me, then there is elm which is a real pain in the ass to work with but still makes tables like no other wood.
And then all questions and doubts disappear, and I am grateful that I do the work I do.

Second there is the people I work with. Without them I would not be doing what I am doing. I could not be on my own. Everything I do is a product of inspiring dialogues with other people. Be it my clients, apprentices who might stay with me for years or other people who share my workshop just for a little while.

Albert has been with me now for well over a year. It is great to have him, and to bounce ideas and questions back and forth with him. He has great energy and enthusiasm and after doing this work for so long, this is exactly what I need to keep going.
He also creates most of the Instagram content and it is thanks to him, that we have just broken through the one thousand Follower barrier!!!

And by the way: You can help us by leaving comments, saving this post and by sharing our posts with people you know.

This standing desk has taken quite a few years to build.
It has been a very special project.

When I left the workshop of my Master, Petter Southall, , after 5 years of training, he gave me this beautiful plank of english brown oak.

This was in 2003. For many years I had been lugging this piece of wood all over Europe. When I finally moved into my own workshop in 2020, i started this project.

The stand is built from english brown oak, which I cut into veneers and styrian oak. I used animal glue and shellac.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the original plank.

I like it, when the wood I use has it's own story. That is also why I don't buy my wood at big lumberyards. Instead I buy it from local farmers, small sawmills or sometimes I even go through the trouble of sawing it myself.

If you want a bed from our workshop and your budget is on the smaller side, this is the one to go for.

It starts at 2450.- and it is made from Lebanon cedar. The wood is soft and has an ever so slight sweet fragrance. It will make you dream of far away countries, magic carpets and floating lightly in the air.

Send me a message if you are interested.

We took some time to take pictures. Here is a bench made from pear and oak.
I bought a few amazing pear trees and this is the first piece we built from it.

Pear is becoming a rarity these days. There are not many farmers who would look after their trees for a few generations.

The piece is for sale, so send me a message if you want further information.

And now: weekend here I come!
