Mixed Reality: The local VR space. A virtual, spatial, borderless, multi-user visual space that reinterprets the acanthus leaf ornament (a quintessential imitation of nature in architecture) and extends it into a space of immersive visual, haptic and acoustic experiences for ‘visitors’ with VR headsets (available on site). Here, users can also interact with the avatar of the robotic arm, which can also transcend its own technological, machine-like nature and become an integral part of the design environment. In the digital space, the visitors’ movements are processed exclusively digitally. This allows interaction with the robot in the most direct way and without time delay – a future-oriented step towards intuitive human-machine cooperation scenarios.

Paradigm shifts in architecture are not only reactive to changes in society but are proactive towards the production of cultural transformations such as the way we design, produce and place buildings into the environment. The project Post-Digital Neo-Baroque is an endeavour to provide evidence for the impact of a Neo-Baroque mentality and style across various disciplines that have reached a Post-Digital state of affairs.
By drawing inspiration from, and founding its research on, both Heinrich Wölfflin’s seminal work Principles of Art History and Omar Calabrese’s hypothesis outlined in Neo-Baroque: A Sign of Our Time, the team embark on a transdisciplinary, transcultural and transhistorical investigation in theory and design of the spirit of our age that pervades many of today’s cultural phenomena in all fields of knowledge. One of the most intriguing questions of the current architectural and artistic discourse is in fact the potential reconciliation of two seeming opposites in the contemporary architectural discourse – digital design and the physical environment of traditional technology, crafts and aesthetics.
By additionally including the Baroque notion of “Gesamtkunstwerk”, the project aims to converge the digital, the physical and the virtual to generate innovative artistic and architectural design output. The findings will be showcased in a public exhibition, discussed in an international symposium and published in a three-volume compendium including a reader documenting theoretical findings, an exhibition catalogue and the conference proceedings.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS - extended deadline: April 8th, 2022

International conference,
8th-9th December 2022, Obergurgl, Austria

TRAITS 2022 Call for Abstracts invites investigations of the intersection of postdigital and neobaroque. It asks contributors to reflect upon the interlinkage between the two terms and to find individual, open interpretations. Research has shown that there is no agreement on a common aesthetic canon given by the neobaroque and the postdigital paradigms: in architecture, for example, one post-digital trajectory aims at static, simple, 2D flat collages, whilst the other points to dynamic, complex, 4D animated computational systems. The conference addresses the latter and hopes to create a platform for like-minded theorists and artists to exchange ideas and visions and to discover each other’s work. The aim is to collect a broad spectrum of contributions to trigger a discourse on contemporary design and theory. Submissions by multidisciplinary teams and collaborations are strongly encouraged.

Submit by April 8, 2022.
