As part of the Safety of Journalists project, my Office co-organized a Joint Training Programme for Law Enforcement Agents and Journalists at the Police Academy in Greece last week, bringing together over 50 participants both in person and online.

Implemented by the International Training Center for the Safety of Journalists (ICSJ) under the scientific supervision of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the programme focused on promoting international standards on freedom of expression and journalist safety, while also strengthening cooperation and mutual understanding between media professionals and law enforcement during public assemblies and crisis situations.

A key characteristic of the training was its interactive approach. Role-playing exercises and mixed roundtable discussions received particularly positive feedback from participants, fostering practical dialogue, building trust, and helping to bridge the gap between journalists and security professionals.

By fostering collaboration and shared understanding, the programme contributes to creating a safer and more enabling environment for journalists and reinforces the importance of protecting media freedom in democratic societies.

Today's 25th anniversary of the killing of Serbian journalist Milan Pantić is a stark reminder that justice delayed is justice denied. I reiterate my call on the Serbian authorities to renew their efforts to resolve this case and end impunity for crimes against journalists.

Today, on International Children’s Day, together with the other freedom of expression mandates from the UN, OAS, and AU, we are launching our 2026 Joint Declaration on the Right to Freedom of Expression and Access to Information of Children in the Digital Age.

As children’s lives become increasingly digital, protecting their right to freedom of expression online is more important than ever. In this Joint Declaration, we explore how to translate human rights into the realities faced by children. We conclude that to enable participatory democracy, we have to invest in the safety, inclusivity, and human rights protections of children. It is a prerequisite for stability, development, and security.

Elections are taking place in information environments unlike anything we have seen before. What is different is the scale, speed, precision, emotional intensity with which information can be manipulated, fragmented, industrialized, I said today at the Human Dimension side event.
