As part of the »Wiener WohnBAUM Programm«, a city initiative funding timber and hybrid construction, the project »4 x 4 Der Holzpilot« is currently coming to life. Spread across three different building sites, the diverse project allows for the setting of highly different scale: from single- and multifamily homes (Naufahrtweg) to nature-embedded residential quarters (Orasteig) and to landmark starter-apartment complexes (Aspernstrasse).
Developed in collaboration by and , the project requires minimal material use over its life cycle and creates durable and adaptable spatial structures. From planning to manufacturing to construction and use, the construction kit follows a closed-cycle system:
The wood modules are factory-produced with little waste, then screwed together and complemented with low-emission secondary construction materials like recycled concrete. Modular ceiling panels, wall elements, and prefab wet-room units make for a low-noise and quick construction process. A simple basic structure and repetitive elements allow for easy assembly of the building.
This week, we’ve been on-site watching the pre-fab beams and ceilings go up at Naufarthweg. Embedded in lush nature, these two timber houses will bring calmness and a sense of nature to their future residents.
