Yesterday, the kick-off meeting of our KLAIR research project took place in person in Vienna. KLAIR is developing an AI-supported urban climate analysis map that visualizes microclimatic stressors and can simulate climate change adaption scenarios such as greening or redensification.

The aim is to better understand heat-related stressors and support cities in climate-resilient and health-oriented development.

KLAIR is funded by the FFG as part of the mission “Climate-neutral city – technologies and innovations for the climate-neutral city 2025.” The project partners are , IBO – Austrian Institute for Building Biology and Ecology, (Medical University of Vienna) and ubicube GmbH.

In 2024, Superwien supported the Government of The Bahamas in close collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank through a CCLIP program aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, advancing inclusive and climate resilient mobility in New Providence.

Together, we developed a strategic framework for safer, more accessible, and climate adaptive streets in Nassau and across New Providence, including safer intersections, upgraded sidewalks and bus stops, traffic calming, green infrastructure, and improved drainage.

The project prioritized pedestrians, cyclists, and vulnerable users while reducing flood risks and emissions. It demonstrates how integrated design and climate adaptation can create safer, greener, and more connected urban environments.

Roland Krebs from superwien, together with Hans Karssenberg from , contributed a chapter to the new book Trustmaking: A Guidebook on Youth Empowerment in Urban Transformation, edited by the Trustmaking Collective.

Titled “Rethinking Placemaking”, the chapter explores how trust can be actively built through placemaking practices, highlighting concrete tools at and their application in superwien’s work in Vienna and in urban contexts worldwide.

A careful addition to current debates on urban transformation, based on creativity, collaboration, and meaningful place-based design.

Developed for a two-stage realization competition at Mendelgasse in Graz, the project proposes an active ground-floor zone along the neighborhood avenue. A diverse housing mix is combined with an innovative, building-integrated noise protection facing the busy thoroughfare Liebenauer Tangente. At its core, a generous green center and versatile residential courtyards shape an affordable, community-oriented urban living environment.

On Friday, third-semester Master’s students presented their work at the GB* urban renewal office. The office is overseeing the neighbourhood’s involvement in the major development project on the former railway site known as „Nordwestbahnhof“.

Representatives from the City of Vienna and the Federal Railway Company (ÖBB) as well as other urban planning experts from University of Vienna and TU Wien were invited to evaluate the students‘ suggestions for the developments situated in the vibrant center of the new neighborhood around the extension of Wallensteinstraße.

A big thank you to your great guest critics: Andreas Trisko (Head of MA 18 – Municipal Department 18 for Urban Development and Planning), Ruth Höpler (TU Wien Future.lab), Philip Krassnitzer (University of Vienna, Department of Spatial Research and Spatial Planning), Martin Scheiflinger (ÖBB-Immobilienmanagement GmbH – Real Estate Management), Theresa Stadelmayer and Ivica Pasalic (both ÖBB Housing Programme), Karl Dwulit (Deputy 20th District Manager), Antonia Dika (Head of the Urban Renewal Office responsible for Nordwestbahnhof), and Andrea Rieger-Jandl (Head of the Master’s Programme in Architecture and Green Building at Hochschule Campus Wien)

We are part of CATALYSE, a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Commission, supporting European cities on their path towards climate neutrality. The project focuses on better connecting local initiatives and strengthening the role of knowledge institutions as trusted partners in urban innovation and transformation processes.

Within the Vienna pilot, the project explores the transformation of former railway station areas as strategic sites for climate-neutral and socially inclusive urban development. superwien contributes its expertise in co-creation and participatory urban planning, working closely with AIT and TU Wien future.lab to support collaborative experimentation and long-term change at the local level.

CATALYSE brings together four pilot cities: Leipzig and Rotterdam (EU Cities Mission cities) as well as Manchester and Vienna, enabling exchange across different urban contexts.
