With sufficient roof space available, this Surrey Hills home gave us the opportunity to design a larger solar and battery system focused on maximising year-round energy self-sufficiency.

The Every Solar 2.0 team installed a 15.98 kW solar system paired with 30 kWh of usable battery storage, allowing the household to generate more of its own electricity during the day and store surplus solar energy for use in the evening and overnight.

⚡ CHEAPER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER — KNOW WHAT YOU’RE BUYING

Recent industry news has highlighted an important reminder for anyone considering a home battery in Australia.

The Clean Energy Council (CEC) has announced its intention to suspend seven NEOVOLT battery models from eligibility for Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which underpin the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate, due to product compliance issues.

The reported issues include:
🔹 An IEC 62619 certificate relied upon for approval of several models becoming invalid
🔹 Product nameplate labels not matching the testing and certification documentation supplied for approval
🔹 Difficulty distinguishing between different imported battery variants

Importantly, the CEC stated that the proposed suspension was not related to a product recall or an identified product safety issue.

The 8kW GoodWe hybrid inverter was selected to work within the limitations of the existing main switchboard setup, while providing an integrated platform for solar generation and battery storage.

Paired with 24kWh of usable GoodWe battery storage, the system allows more of the solar energy generated during the day to be stored and used later when household demand is higher.
The modular battery design also provides flexibility for future expansion as the household’s energy requirements evolve.

3 HOURS OF FREE ELECTRICITY EVERY DAY!

The Victorian Government is introducing the Midday Power Saver, giving eligible households access to free electricity during the middle of the day.

By making smarter use of energy during the daytime, households may have an opportunity to reduce their electricity costs. Actual savings will depend on how and when electricity is used.

🟠 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
📅 Starts: 1 October 2026
🕚 Free electricity: 11 am – 2 pm, every day
⚡ Daily allowance: Up to 24 kWh of free grid electricity

🏡 WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

To access the offer, you generally need to:
✅ Be a residential electricity customer in Victoria
✅ Have a smart meter installed
✅ Opt in through an eligible electricity retailer

Both homeowners and renters may be eligible. Licensed retailers with 1,000 customers or more will be required to offer the Midday Power Saver.

🔋 WHAT ABOUT SOLAR & BATTERY OWNERS?

Households with compatible battery systems may be able to schedule battery charging during the free electricity period and use the stored energy later when electricity is more expensive.

EV charging, hot water systems and other high-energy appliances can also be scheduled during the free period to make better use of daytime electricity. The Victorian Government recommends spreading multiple high-energy loads across the three-hour window rather than operating everything at the same time.

Actual savings will depend on your electricity usage, system configuration and electricity plan.

🟠 HOW DOES THE SOLAR SOAK PERIOD WORK?

⚡ 11 am – 2 pm: Up to 24 kWh of free electricity each day.
☀️ 2 pm – 4 pm: Electricity is charged at the applicable Solar Soak rate.

If electricity use exceeds the 24 kWh daily fair-use cap during the free period, the excess usage is charged at the applicable Solar Soak/excess usage rate.

This gives households an opportunity to make greater use of electricity during the middle of the day, when solar generation across Victoria is high.

🟠 CAN RETAILERS STILL OFFER THEIR OWN FREE ELECTRICITY PLANS?

YES! The Midday Power Saver does not replace existing retailer market offers.

Electricity retailers can continue offering their own free-electricity plans, including offers with three or more free hours per day. These market offers can have different pricing structures, eligibility requirements and conditions.

Before switching, compare:
✅ Free electricity hours and daily allowances
✅ Electricity rates outside the free period
✅ Daily supply charges
✅ Solar feed-in tariffs and battery incentives

Remember: Free hours of electricity do not always mean a lower electricity bill! Electricity prices outside the free period may be higher, so the best plan depends on your household's usage pattern.
