"What is Repointing?"

To explain that we first look at what is pointing? The stuff that fills the gaps and holds the bricks (or stones) together in your wall is called mortar. When builders finish putting the bricks together, they smooth out the mortar in between. This process is called "pointing." It helps keep the bricks in place and makes your walls look neat and tidy. However, over time, the mortar can get old and fall out (or be damaged by salt crystals).

Repointing is like giving your wall a makeover by replacing the old, crumbly mortar with new, strong mortar. This helps keep the bricks in place and your house sturdy and looking good!

In simple terms, Repointing is fixing the stuff between the bricks to make sure your house stays strong and safe.

Welcome to "What is" Wednesday. We often get asked what some of the terms used in the construction are so we thought we would break it down for you. First up, What is a Bridged Dampcourse?

Imagine your house is like a giant sponge. It can soak up water from the ground if there's nothing to stop it. To keep the walls dry, a special barrier is placed at the base of your walls called a damp proof course. In newer homes, this is the black plastic that sticks out at the base of your walls.

But sometimes, this barrier gets "bridged" or covered over, which means it can't do its job properly. It's like putting a band-aid over a hole in a sponge and then covering the band-aid with water. The water still gets through!

A "bridged" DPC can happen when soil, garden beds, or even new construction materials like paths or pavers cover this barrier. This lets water sneak past the DPC and into your walls, causing dampness and damage.

In simple terms, A bridged damp proof course is when something gets in the way of the barrier that's meant to keep your house dry, letting water in where it shouldn't be.

Leaf-blocked gutters may not seem like a big deal but ensuring this part of your home is in good working order has far reaching benefits.

Neil was asked to look at this wall last week, and the client was worried about it crumbling and having white, powdery patches. This damage is caused by salt damp, which happens when water from the ground rises up into the wall and brings salts with it. Over time, these salts build up and make the wall weak and crumbly.

In this case, the damage was made worse because of the use of concrete mortar instead of traditional lime mortar. Concrete mortar can trap moisture and salts in the walls, worsening salt damp and leading to more severe damage.
