Getting there isn’t always quick. Some designs take hours of drafting, scrapping and redrafting before you hit that purple patch, where it finally clicks. That’s the joy of it, and the pain too. The mistakes along the way are how you find the right path.

Every line on this plan has intention behind it. It has to work with the property, the house, the microclimate, the bioregion, the aspect, the sunlight, how water runs off and moves across the site, and plenty more.

That’s what drafting really is. Not just drawing a garden, but finding the one that belongs there.

Something amazing happened today. 🌿

🌿 PAGES FLAT SITE VISIT
Turning a farm dam into a natural swimming hole, and a living habitat for the Fleurieu

There’s something special about a site that already has life in it. Out at Pages Flat on the Fleurieu Peninsula, we’re redesigning an entire dam into a space that works for the family and the ecosystem at the same time.

THE VISION
A natural swimming hole and gathering place that becomes more ecologically alive every season, managed entirely without chemical w**d control.

THE DESIGN ZONES
→ Family zone: a barbecue and outdoor dining retreat beside a beautiful existing gum
→ Entrance zone: a soft, beach-style entry to the water
→ Back edge: large rocks, native trees and planting to enclose the dam
→ Water access: entry points along the side for fishing, plus a pontoon or two for summer swimming
→ Horse track: a single entry point so the horses can come in for a swim

THE SITE
Water testing is looking really promising. There’s some leaking to address, so remediation will be part of the scope. Natural runoff comes through in a couple of spots, and we’ll design to work with it, not against it.

🌱 WHAT’S ALREADY HERE
The site is holding onto some beautiful remnant species:
→ Bulbine bulbosa (bulbine lily)
→ Arthropodium strictum (chocolate lily)
→ Native sedges throughout
→ Native sundews

These are the plants that tell us what this land wants to be. They’ll shape the planting palette for the whole project.

Drafting starts soon. Can’t wait to get stuck into this one.

Good morning! This one's for all my designer friends out there who follow the page.

Handling enquiries and leads can be very time-consuming. When we have bundles of work on, deep in a project with our head down and bum up in design work, taking a bit of time to follow up on enquiries can really kill us. It is crucial to jump on leads as soon as possible, because if you leave it too long, you will probably lose the work.

My advice, and this is something I constantly remind myself of every week, is twofold:

1. Get onto enquiries as soon as possible.
2. Work on streamlining your process.

It is easy to get caught up spending hours giving away free advice. If you refine your process, when enquiries arrive you can easily book a chat or clearly communicate what you offer without giving everything away or selling too much of yourself straight out of the gate.

That is why sharing our work on Instagram can qualify clients so effectively: they have already seen what you do and heard your thoughts, so there is already prior knowledge. Having a landing page or website also does a lot of the heavy lifting.

Otherwise, you can get completely bogged down in lead management only to not win the job. If that happens ten times in a row (which definitely happens), it becomes a costly drain that takes you away from actual delivery work.

Lorikeets dropped by to say g’day 🦜

And the mallee box is just starting to flower. When this thing fully goes off, there’s so much fu***ng life on it it’s crazy. Best thing I’ve ever planted, hands down.

What’s going off 👇
🌾 Spear grass (Austrostipa): tussock grass with feathery seed heads
🟡 Billy buttons (Pycnosorus): silvery foliage with golden ball flowers on long stems
🌺 Native hibiscus (Alyogyne): drought-tough shrub with big lilac flowers
🌿 Coastal rosemary (Olearia axillaris): silvery, salt-tough shrub with little white daisies
💛 Clasping goodenia (Goodenia amplexans): small, sticky, stinky shrub with bright yellow flowers
🦘 Kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra): iconic tussock with rusty red seed heads
🔥 Mt Lofty grass tree (Xanthorrhoea quadrangulata): slow-growing SA local with a nectar-loaded flower spike
🔔 Correa: tubular bell flowers for the honeyeaters, and taller than me right now
🫐 Sweet appleberry (Billardiera cymosa): twining climber with bell flowers and edible berries
🍊 Native apricot (Pittosporum angustifolium): weeping tree with orange fruits and sticky red seeds
🤍 Boobialla (Myoporum insulare): hardy coastal shrub with white spotted flowers and purple berries
🌱 Cyperus vaginatus: stiff sedge for damp spots, traditionally used for weaving
🟤 Knobby club-rush (Ficinia nodosa): tough rush with little brown flower k***s
🎋 Common reed (Phragmites australis): tall wetland reed that grows like it’s on something
💜 Flax lily (Dianella revoluta): blue-purple star flowers, then purple berries
🌲 Oyster Bay pine (Callitris rhomboidea): native cypress pine, now way taller than me
🐝 Mallee box (Eucalyptus porosa): SA mallee with masses of creamy flowers and absolute wildlife central

That’s the native crew. I’ve got a heap of productive stuff growing too, so that’s coming in the next video 👊

Hope everyone had a great long weekend and is currently enjoying any holidays you might be on! This is just a general update to say I hope everyone is well.

I have some great photos of wildflowers from our family hikes in the Flinders Ranges that I'll share soon.

Lately, I've also been really appreciating the coastal mallee gum and coastal mallee box we have in our front yard. They are attracting more and more birds, and they're just such an important piece to have in our front garden.
