Following on from yesterday’s post. I’ve had another client ask about water consumption, so here’s the breakdown.

💧 Water consumption of ducted evaporative air conditioning

✅ Typical water use (whole-house ducted system)

For a ducted evaporative cooler in an average size 4 bedroom home:
• About 10 to 30 litres per hour (small to medium units)
• Around 40 to 70 litres per hour for large whole home systems
• Up to 70 litres/hour or more on very hot, dry days (large units on high fan) 

👉 Adelaide’s dry climate means evaporative systems often run at the higher end of the range on heatwave days.

Our installer states that 40–70 L/hour is typical usage for ducted systems in SA conditions.

💰 What does that cost in South Australia?

Water prices vary by provider, but SA households typically pay roughly:
• $2.50–$3.50 per 1,000 litres (1 kL) including supply & usage charges (very rough average).

Let’s use $3/kL as a simple estimate.

🏠 Typical 4 bedroom home (medium ducted system)

Water use: 40–70 L/hour
Cost:
• 💧 $0.12–$0.24 per hour
• 💧 $1–$2 per day (8 hours use)
• 💧 $30–$60 per month (heavy summer use)

If used most hot days (say 3 months):
• 10,000–30,000 litres total water
• $30–$100 total water cost

👉 That’s surprisingly cheap compared with electricity savings.

The SA government estimates 24 c to 72 c per hour for ducted evaporative cooling (including water) depending on tariff and conditions. 

➡️ Compare that to $1.80–$3.00+ per hour for ducted refrigerated air conditioning.

🌱 Important things most people don’t realise

✅ Water dump cycles

Evaporative systems periodically dump salty water to prevent mineral build-up, which increases water use (especially if turned on/off frequently).

✅ Weather matters hugely
• Hot & dry = best cooling but more water use
• Humid = less cooling, less evaporation

✅ Maintenance matters

Dirty pads, faulty float, incorrectly set bleed off system or faulty dump valves can waste thousands of litres and spike water bills.

• Use modern units with salinity sensors & water-saving features

I’ve just had a client ask me a question regarding the average running costs of a ducted evaporative air conditioner for a four bedroom home, so I thought I’d share the answer to the wider community too 😊

Here’s a realistic ball park guide to the average cost of running a ducted evaporative air conditioner in a typical 4 bedroom home in SA.

✅ Typical ducted evaporative system (whole house)
• About $0.14 to $0.35 per hour to run, depending on system size and electricity rate. 
• That’s roughly:
• 💰 $1.10–$2.80 for 8 hours per day
• 💰 $30–$85 per month if used most days
• 💰 $100–$250 for a whole summer (3 months)

These estimates assume electricity around 35–45c/kWh (typical Aussie rates).

Our local installer suggests:
• $50–$150 per summer for many Adelaide homes (much cheaper than refrigerated air conditioning ).

⚡ Why evaporative is cheap to run
• Uses only fans and a water pump (no compressor).
• Uses roughly 1/10th the electricity of ducted refrigerated air conditioning.
