Electrical Fire Hazard Alert: RCBO Fire Incident Linked to EV Charger
Attention Residents and EV Owners:
A recent incident where we were called out to a client that’s lost power to half her house. involving a Residual Current Breaker with Overload (RCBO) that caught fire after an electric vehicle (EV) charger was plugged in, overloading the circuit. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, but the situation serves as a critical reminder of the importance of electrical safety.
What Happened:
An EV charger was plugged into a standard circuit not rated for high continuous loads.
The resulting overload caused the RCBO to overheat and catch fire.
What You Need to Know:
EV chargers draw significant power and require circuits specifically designed to handle the load.
Standard household circuits may not be sufficient—never plug an EV charger into a regular socket without first consulting a licensed electrician.
A qualified professional must install any EV charging equipment to ensure it complies with electrical safety standards.
Safety Tips:
✅ Always use dedicated EV charging infrastructure installed by certified electricians.
✅ Regularly inspect your electrical panel and breakers for signs of wear, heat, or damage.
✅ If you notice any burning smells, heat from outlets, or tripping breakers—turn off the power and call a professional immediately.
✅ Install smoke detectors near your electrical panel and garage.
This incident is a serious warning—EV charging is not plug-and-play. Ensuring your electrical system is up to the task is critical for your safety and the safety of your home.
