One year after planting… 🌵☀️

…and the garden is doing exactly what great gardens should do.

It’s no longer looking planted.

It’s looking like it belongs.

The cacti have found their confidence. The bromeliads are throwing their dramatic shapes into the mix. The Euphorbia Firesticks are lighting up the garden with bursts of orange, and the rolling green mounds are softening what could otherwise be a hard, architectural space.

This is the part nobody talks about enough.

The first year is where the real magic happens.

Roots settle. Plants stretch. Shapes connect. And suddenly a collection of individual plants becomes a landscape.

Standing here now, it feels like a little piece of Palm Springs accidentally landed on the Mornington Peninsula and decided to stay. 🌴✨

Strong forms. Soft curves. Desert attitude. Coastal soul.

Not bad for twelve months’ work from Mother Nature. 💚

🔥 STOP SCROLLING… 🔥

Because this isn’t a campfire.

This is Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Fire Sticks’ doing its thing.

Every winter these wild, pencil-thin stems transform from humble green to an explosion of molten orange, coral, gold and pink. No flowers. No fancy maintenance. Just pure botanical madness. 🌅✨

One minute it’s quietly sitting in the background… the next it’s stealing the entire show like it’s headlining its own rock concert. 🎸🔥

We love planting Fire Sticks amongst cool blues, silvers and soft greens because the contrast is ridiculous. The garden suddenly looks like someone has poured a Mornington Peninsula sunset straight into the landscape. 🍊💥

Tough? Absolutely.

Drought tolerant? Yep.

Architectural? You bet.

Subtle? Not a chance. 😂

At CHD we’re always chasing those moments where visitors stop, point and ask, “What on earth is THAT?”

Fire Sticks delivers every single time.

Nature really looked at a succulent and thought…

“Let’s make this one look like it’s on fire.” 🔥🌵

A little slice of Palm Springs… dropped into the bushy woodlands of Frankston South.

For Darren and Bec, this garden was all about contrast. Bold architectural forms softened by a tapestry of succulents, sculptural aloes standing proud, cactus reaching for the sky, and a carpet of silver-blue groundcovers weaving everything together.

The beauty of this garden is that it doesn’t try to fight its surroundings. It borrows from the native landscape beyond while bringing a touch of desert glamour right to the front door.

Palm Springs meets the Peninsula.

And honestly… we’re here for it.

A little corner of a one acre garden… and honestly, it feels like a holiday.

Powder blue agaves, rivers of chalk sticks, sculptural concrete forms and those gorgeous volcanic brown boulders that look like they’ve been sitting here forever. Every turn reveals another vignette, another texture, another reason to stop and stare.

This is what happens when planting is allowed to be the hero.

Working alongside Bec and Darren from Red’s Concrete has been an absolute joy. Good people, good laughs and a shared obsession with getting the details right.

It’s amazing what can happen when concrete softens, succulents spill, boulders weather and everyone trusts the process.

One acre.
Thousands of plants.
A few dirty boots.
And one very happy designer.

Now excuse me while I wander around pretending I don’t know who designed it.

🌿 KROSS HOUSE 🌿

One of the things I love most about this project is how the landscape and architecture work together as one. Designed by the talented team at FIGR Architecture and built by Vivid Construction Company, Kross House sits beautifully within its coastal Mount Martha setting, allowing the architecture to feel as though it rises naturally from the land.

For Colin Hyett Design, the landscape was never about competing with the building. It was about softening the edges, celebrating the natural rock, introducing indigenous planting, and creating a garden that feels like it has always belonged here.

The best projects happen when architects, builders and landscape designers work together toward the same vision. This was one of those projects.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this incredible home and its recognition within Australian timber architecture.

A little note though… it looks like the landscape design credit has accidentally been missed in a few recent posts. We’d love to see the gardens recognised as part of the story of Kross House too. After all, architecture may frame the experience, but landscape is what connects it to the earth. 🌱

🌕✨ Quick… go outside and have a look at tonight’s full moon.

It’s the perfect reminder that great gardens aren’t just for daylight hours. This is one of our gardens 2½ years after planting, captured on the eve of the full moon, where light, shadow and planting come together to create a completely different experience after dark.

Garden lighting isn’t just about seeing where you’re going. It’s about creating atmosphere, highlighting sculptural forms, celebrating texture and extending the enjoyment of your garden well into the evening.

A beautifully designed landscape should never disappear when the sun goes down… it should simply come alive in a different way.

And on a night like tonight, under a full moon, there’s nowhere else you’d rather be. 🌿✨🌕

🌿✨ CHD concept design…. A truly special project on the Mornington Peninsula… and we need your help! ✨🌿

Imagine arriving for cancer treatment and being welcomed by a beautiful healing garden inspired by our Peninsula and Australian landscape … soft grasses, indigenous planting, habitat, colour and calm. 💚

The Bays Cancer Centre is a community-owned, not-for-profit facility doing incredible things for local families, and CHD has been invited to develop a landscape vision for the centre.

Now we’d love to help make it a reality.

🌱 Are you a business owner?
🌱 Know a generous philanthropist?
🌱 Want to be part of something that genuinely gives back to our community?

We’re looking for partners, sponsors and supporters to help fund this special project and create a garden that brings comfort, hope and a moment of peace to patients, families and staff.

Let’s turn this vision into something extraordinary… together. 🙌

If you’d like to get involved, send me a message.

Let’s get this project growing! 🌿✨💚

This is a rendering of the project that could be reality and flow into other areas of the building.

✨ A new chapter begins… ✨

After more than 30 years of collecting art, building friendships with extraordinary creatives, and living alongside beautiful works in my own home, I’m incredibly excited to introduce Hyett & The Captain.

A curated gallery space showcasing artists, makers and designers whose work has inspired me throughout my journey. Some are dear friends, some are emerging voices, and some are celebrated creatives from Australia and around the world.

This isn’t just a gallery. It’s a collection of stories, friendships, creativity and craftsmanship brought together under one roof.

I’d love for you to come along for the ride as I share exhibitions, events, artist profiles and behind-the-scenes moments from this beautiful space in Balnarring.

Follow and visit hyettandthecaptain.com.au to stay up to date with exhibition openings, special events and gallery hours.

Welcome to Hyett & The Captain… a place where art, design, conversation and community come together.
