Beware- Carnivorous Pond Plants
These Pitcher Plants (sarracenia variety) have never looked better.
They've been in flower for a month now, and the trumpets are an impressive 30cm long.
They patiently sit all spring and summer, awaiting a fly, wasp or other yummy flying machine to be attracted to the enticing juice at the bottom of each trumpet.
You often see carnivorous plants for sale at nurseries, always indoors, and generally with a plastic terrarium type cover. This incorrectly signifies that the Pitcher Plant is delicate, but this is not the case.
Truth is they can handle what our Canberra climate can throw at them with ease. They really like full, if you can keep them wet enough. They do best with wet feet, so a Kraken Pond is the perfect place to plant Carnies.
They will die back in winter, like most plants, and these guys can even handle being under snow. A little trimming of the trumpets as they die back helps keep things looking tidy.
Then every spring, they burst back.
and this year these specimens look amazing!
These Sarracenias are certainly the centre piece of this and many other Kraken Ponds. They add to the watergarden ecosystem beautifully and they bring endless joy with little effort from you, year after year.
