Rodents like mice and rats aren’t just a nuisance - they can cause serious damage to your home’s essential services.
Recently, we attended a job where rodents had chewed through both an electrical cable and a water hose. The electrical cable had been stripped back to exposed wires, creating a significant fire and safety hazard. Even worse, the damaged water hose had split completely, resulting in water flooding through the client’s kitchen while they were out.
This type of damage is more common than people think. Rodents are constantly gnawing to keep their teeth down, and unfortunately, plumbing hoses and electrical wiring are easy targets.
Risks include:
• Electrical fires from exposed wiring
• Major water damage from burst or leaking hoses
• Mould and long-term structural issues
• Costly emergency repairs
What to look out for:
• Unexplained drops in water pressure
• Damp patches or water where it shouldn’t be
• Tripped electrical circuits
• Signs of rodent activity (droppings, scratching sounds, nests)
Prevention is key:
• Seal entry points around your home
• Keep food sources secure
• Regularly inspect under sinks, behind appliances, and roof spaces
• Consider pest control if activity is suspected
If you notice any signs of damage or want peace of mind with an inspection, don’t leave it too late - small problems can turn into big ones very quickly.
