We’re excited to be starting a new design project for a renovation and extension to this gorgeous Californian bungalow in Murrumbeena.

Collaborating with SEMMbuild | Melbourne Home Builder to keep on track with the budget from early on, I’ve been trying out exterior colour schemes to get ready for a town planning submission to Council.

Although the house is not within a Heritage overlay, the Neighbourhood Character overlay means a planning permission is still needed and particular requirements regarding front and side setbacks apply.

If your home is in a planning overlay and you need help understanding what it means for a renovation or extension project, we can demystify the process and assist with navigating the Council requirements.

Restoring a terracotta tiled roof on a period home requires experience and craftsmanship to achieve results as stunning as this!

New tiles from Monier Roofing with original finials and crested ridge tiles pressure washed and restored to immaculate condition by Ultra Builders Pty Ltd on our Armadale renovation.

Need help choosing the finishes for your home?

Choosing tiles, flooring, cabinetry, colours, tapware and other finishes can quickly become overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to picture how hundreds of individual decisions will work together.

This is where I can help.

I work closely with my clients to select materials, colours and finishes that complement the design, suit their home and create a cohesive look and feel throughout.

Rather than making decisions in isolation at the tile shop or the cabinet makers, we look at the bigger picture so that every element works together to create a home that feels considered, connected and uniquely yours.

And importantly, you don’t have to navigate all those choices on your own.

So exciting dropping into our Murrumbeena project this morning to see how quickly the extension is taking shape.
With the roof on as well as external wall wrap and cladding, the scale of the high ceilinged open plan living / dining / kitchen at the rear is now apparent. The raking underside of the roof creates extra height and volume and gave us an opportunity to insert a high level triangular window to capture the morning light from the east without being blocked by the neighbouring house.
Once the big 2.7m high sliding doors have their glass in, it’s reached ‘lockup’ stage and the internal fit out gets under way.

The architect’s role doesn’t stop when the structural drawings arrive.

A client recently asked me whether the structural drawings were really something the builder needed to look at, rather than me.

It made me realise I hadn’t explained this part of my role clearly enough.

On a recent two-storey home in Bentleigh, I incorporated the structural members into my architectural model and found:

→ A beam that would protrude above the sliding doors
→ Another that would drop below the ceiling
→ A structural column that would have ended up in the middle of a relocated window

Fortunately, we found these issues before construction started and worked with the engineer to resolve them.

That’s the value of coordination.

The structural engineer understands the structure.
The builder understands construction. The architect needs to understand how all the different parts of the building work together.

Good coordination means solving problems while they’re still lines on a drawing - not problems on a building site.

Renovating your home shouldn’t feel like a second job.

If you’re busy with work, family and everything else life throws at you, finding the time to manage a renovation or extension can feel overwhelming.

That’s where I come in.

As an architect with more than 30 years’ experience, I help homeowners navigate the entire process, from understanding what’s possible and developing a design that feels right, to finding the right team and bringing all the different elements of the project together.

My role is to take the complexity out of the process, give you confidence in the decisions you’re making and make sure the design works as a cohesive whole - not just room by room.

And because JDA Lammin Architects is a small practice, you work directly with me throughout your project. You get my experience, knowledge and personal attention from the first conversation through to the finished home.

So you can spend less time worrying about your renovation and more time looking forward to living in it.

Old and new, deliberately contrasted.

For this heritage cottage in Hampton, the brief was to create much-needed additional space without trying to imitate the original home.

Instead, the first-floor extension takes a deliberately contemporary approach — a bold metal-clad box that sits in contrast to the white weatherboards of the existing cottage.

The result is a clear distinction between old and new, while allowing both parts of the home to retain their own character.

We believe a contemporary addition to a period home doesn’t need to pretend it was always there. Sometimes, the strongest designs come from confidently celebrating the difference.

“Renovations can feel daunting, but she has a unique gift for making the complex feel entirely manageable.”

This is one of the greatest compliments I could receive as an architect.

A renovation involves dozens of decisions, unexpected challenges and
many moving parts and I believe my role is about much more than simply designing the plans.

It’s about listening carefully, helping you understand your options, finding creative solutions when challenges arise, and giving you the confidence to make decisions you feel comfortable with.

Most importantly, I want my clients to feel supported and reassured throughout the process, knowing that someone experienced is keeping an
eye on the bigger picture and helping to keep everything moving in the right
direction.

I was incredibly grateful to receive this feedback from a recent client, who described me as their “mentor, practical guide… and the glue who kept all
the moving parts coordinated and on schedule”.

That is exactly how I want the experience of working with me to feel.

If you're considering renovating your home and would like an experienced
architect to guide you through the process, I'd love to hear from you.

Have you previously had plans prepared for an extension or renovation, but put the project on hold because something about the design just didn’t feel right?

Sometimes a project stalls simply because the enthusiasm isn’t there, and when construction costs are higher than ever, it’s understandable that you don’t want to commit to building something that doesn’t truly excite you.

At JDA Lammin Architects, we believe the design phase is where you should take the time to get it right.

We work closely with you to understand your vision, explore the possibilities and collaborate throughout the design process, so that the final design feels like your home, your vision and the right investment for you.

By the time we reach the final drawings, our goal is for you to feel confident, excited and genuinely looking forward to seeing your home transformed.

Because when you love the design, you know you’re ready to build. ✨

When the homeowners of this lovely Hampton home first approached me they weren’t happy with the current layout of the kitchen. It wasn’t facing the right way for how they wanted to use it but the space wasn’t wide enough to simply rotate the design.
We decided to create some extra space by extending out under the existing roofline to create a ‘bay window’ for a new bench, sink and dishwasher.
This made space for the rest of the kitchen to turn to face the garden creating a better connection with outside.
Working out puzzles like this and solving problems is part of what we do. It’s a combination of function and aesthetics that makes a space feel right.
