Introducing Coralescence - a sculptural installation collaboration with
*In a time of cutting-edge technology, the distinction between art and architecture becomes increasingly and enthrallingly blurred. Rapid advances in 3D modelling technologies coupled with the customisation capabilities of 3D printing are making accessible inherently sculptural, freeform structures not constrained by the labour and costs of traditional manufacturing.

Coralescence traverses this line; a 3D printed sculpture formed of 565 unique cells, screwed together to form an architectural grid-shell. A work of biophilic design inspired by Australia’s stunning reefs, each cell is algorithmically ‘grown’; delicately unfurling into a coral-like shell.*

GridShell System | Cell Creation

In the case of our developed GridShell System (pictured) the base concept takes inspiration from Australia’s beautiful coral reefs, with awareness of the devastating effect climate change and pollution have had on reefs and ocean-life at large. Keeping in mind the brief to create a 3D printable, adaptable shell system, the resulting base concept combines natural patterns of differential growth with a logical triangular grid to form a biophillic cellular system reminiscent of bleached coral formations.

We are thrilled to announce that our design has been shortlisted for the Resilient Timber Homes Design Competition!

Taking on Wood Solution’s challenge to convert a benchmark house into a flood and cyclone resilient timber home, our proposal sets out to demonstrate that through strategic design and detailing a light-weight timber house can not only weather an unexpected flood event with minimal damage, but also improve the safety and wellbeing of the occupants and wider community during and following such an event.

To design for true flood-resilience it was accepted that the 1m flood event outlined in the competition brief would be an entirely unforeseen occurrence unexpectedly flooding the ground level of the house – flooding that the local planning code would not have prevented with minimum floor height requirement.
With accessibility, affordability and constructability as central objectives, the proposal maintains the floor area and spatial function of the benchmark house, yet presents a wholly reimagined, innovative, sustainable, and site-respectful design that enhances occupant wellbeing. All whilst incorporating spatial planning and construction detailing methods to minimise flood damage and the consequent repair work.

Santa Monica Shell | LOS ANGELES
The shell itself is formed of the developed GridShell system: a biomimicry cellular system derived from natural patterns of differential growth and the structural principals of seashells. The systems adopts the simple yet inherently efficient method of dividing the shell into grid of triangles – the triangle shape being key, ensuring that all cells will derive from a flat base plane, ensuring FDM 3D printability. Whilst from outward appearance the system conforms to a manmade grid, the cells grow inwards: veiling structural lines in a shroud of sun-illuminated biophilic growth. Embracing nature’s ability to actively respond to climatic conditions the depth of the growth in initially determined by the amount of solar radiation at given points on the surface. Where radiation is highest the growth is deeper, allowing optimum coverage of each cell’s surface segment. Privacy and view attractors are then applied to open the shell to three key views out and ensure privacy from the carpark and into the central core.
