Got rooftop solar? Today’s the time to turn off it off before Alfred hits.

Every system will have slightly different steps, so consult your manual or the installer’s shutdown procedures, which can usually be found at the inverter and/or on the main switchboard. However, as a guide, most will advise to turn off the inverter AC mains isolator, which is usually found in the meter box: it’s very important to turn the AC mains isolator off first, and then also to turn off the photovoltaic (PV) array DC isolator which is usually found next to the inverter.

⚠️ Even if the network is not operational and panels aren't supplying the home, solar systems can continue to generate direct current (DC) power

⚡NEVER climb onto the roof to check or touch the solar system or its components – if there’s any damage, the roof can be live

🔌Treat all solar panels and cables as though they’re live and dangerous

💦 Never touch inverters, switchboards or other electrical equipment if it’s wet, or if you’re standing in water

While the immediate focus during storms, floods and cyclone is on protecting life and property, workplace health and safety obligations remain critical, as well as consideration for ensuring risk control measures are followed.

Please remember to ensure you have appropriate precautions to prepare your worksite from weather and gusty winds. Below are some practical steps you should take to secure your worksite.

🚧 Preparation – ensuring sites are safe and secure 🚧
• Check fences are secure and locking all gates/entries.
• Post emergency contact information on site fencing.
• Remove or secure items that may blow about in extreme weather, including loose tools and. materials
• Secure floor openings with barricades or covers.
• Cover, backfill or otherwise protect trenches and excavations.
• Brace unfinished or temporary structures.
• Remove scaffolding, ladders, shoring and formwork if possible.
• Have a plan to deal with severe rain and flood.
• Remove or secure (out of direct sunlight) flammable liquids and compressed gas cylinders.
• Secure, fence-off and lock tower crane bases.
• Set tower cranes to weather-vane.
• Close windows and lock heavy machinery cabs before removing the keys.
• Store or position other equipment at its lowest potential energy state.
• Speak with manufacturers and follow their instructions for securing cranes and mobile plant
• You should also roster on a list of standby personnel, and obtain after-hours phone numbers from all relevant subcontractors, in case you need to arrange emergency repairs after a severe storm (e.g. scaffolding).
• In cyclone prone areas all scaffold planks should be secured against uplift during cyclone season, please take suitable action to minimise the risk of scaffold planks dislodging.

🌀 Be prepared for Tropical Cyclone Alfred - Electrical Safety Advice🌀
Remember, you don’t have to make direct contact with a powerline for it to kill you. Whether you’re preparing your property for Tropical Cyclone Alfred or starting the clean up, it pays to respect the power.

Electricity can arc (or jump) from powerlines to you and your tools, leading to instant and potentially lethal consequences.

Protecting yourself around powerlines:
• Be careful cleaning up fallen branches and debris around your property as they could be hiding fallen or submerged powerlines - treat any fallen or damaged powerlines as live.

• Fallen and low hanging powerlines can be hard to see, especially during the night or early morning. Stay well away from them and warn others to do the same.

• Report any fallen lines to the emergency services or your electricity entity immediately.

• Keep 3m away from overhead powerlines to avoid accidental contact or arcing incidents.

• Carry ladders and other long tools horizontally, never vertically when cleaning up to avoid contact with overhead powerlines.
