I almost walked off a job last year. I'm glad I didn't.

Everything that could go wrong did β€” weather, access, a nasty surprise under the slab. But we pushed through, and it turned into one of my favourite results.

Sometimes the job that nearly breaks you is the one you end up proudest of.

I've now fixed the same builder's work three times this year. Three different owners. Same skipped base. Same cracks.

Somewhere out there he's still quoting β€” probably cheaper than me.

This is why WHO you hire matters more than HOW MUCH.

Hot take: skipping compaction is the number one reason driveways fail.

You can't see it, so it's the easiest corner to cut β€” and the most expensive one. Soft ground moves, the slab follows, and it cracks.

The boring step under the surface is the one that decides if it lasts 5 years or 50.

Unpopular opinion: the cheapest quote is the most expensive mistake in this industry.

You don't pay for it on the day. You pay for it the first wet season β€” then you pay someone like me to redo it.

Fill in the blank: cheap ended up costing me ______ πŸ‘‡

A quote with no scope written down isn't a quote. It's a guess.

If it doesn't spell out what's included β€” base prep, reinforcement, drainage, the finish β€” you've got nothing to hold anyone to when it goes wrong.

Get it in writing. Every time.

What's the vaguest quote you've ever been handed? πŸ‘‡

Everyone blames the concrete. It's almost never the concrete.

Cracks, movement, crumbling edges β€” nine times out of ten it traces back to what happened before the pour. Bad base. No steel. No joints.

The concrete just copped the blame for someone else's shortcut.

Ever had concrete crack on you? What happened? πŸ‘‡

15 years on the tools and this still gets me every time.

It's the moment a client sees the finished job and goes quiet β€” because it came out better than they pictured.

Not the cheapest. Not the fastest. Just better than you pictured. That's the whole goal.

What's a job (any trade) you'll never forget? πŸ‘‡

Hot take: 'mates rates' wreck more jobs than they save.

Corners get cut, the scope goes fuzzy, and when something's not right nobody wants the awkward conversation.

Pay properly, get it in writing, keep the friendship.

Agree, or am I off here? πŸ‘‡

Same backyard. A few hours of graft in between. πŸ‘·

This Springwood pool surround went from bare ground to a dead-level, broom-finished slab β€” laid right so it's ready to tile straight over. Waterproof membrane down, steel reo in, poured and finished proper. This is job number 5 for this client, and there's a reason they keep calling us back.

A customer went with the cheaper mob last year. They called me 8 months later.

The driveway had already cracked and the edges were crumbling. We ended up ripping it out and starting again β€” so they paid for it twice.

Cheap isn't cheap if you're doing it again next year.

Would you go cheapest, or go once? πŸ‘‡
