Save Our Waterways Now SOWN is a community-based environmental organisation working to restore the habitats of waterways in the Enoggera catchment.

SOWN is supported by the Brisbane City Council through its Habitat Brisbane Program and Water Resources. The project promotes an integrated catchment management approach to priority areas identified in the Brisbane City Council's Waterways Strategy, in association with communities and local authorities. While some of the creek system is being rehabilitated, a great deal of work will be needed to extend the area to join current sites, and to maintain the rehabilitated areas to prevent their re-infestation with weeds. The Creeks draining this part of the valley are over 23 kilometres in length and feed into Breakfast Creek.

🌿 Our community is growing something special! 🌱

A huge thank you to everyone who responded to our call for Hard Quandong (Elaeocarpus obovatus) sightings across the Enoggera Creek catchment. Your local knowledge helps us discover more about the native plants growing in our area. 💚

And a special thank you to Keith McCosh, who has generously donated 43 Hard Quandong seedlings grown from a mature tree on his property beside Woogaroo Creek!

Our nursery volunteers have repotted the seedlings, and they’re doing well. Next stop? Suitable planting sites across the Enoggera Creek catchment, where they’ll help strengthen native vegetation and support local wildlife. 🌱

It’s wonderful to see community knowledge and generosity coming together to give these special native trees a future in our catchment.

🌳 Spotted a Hard Quandong? We’d love to hear from you! Send a photo and its location to [email protected].

Together, we’re helping our local environment put down roots for the future!

🌿 Plant to Plant: Weeping Bottlebrush (Melaleuca viminalis).

Spring is a great time to look out for one of our beautiful local natives,

With its graceful, weeping foliage and striking red bottlebrush flowers, this creek-side tree puts on a spectacular display at this time of year. 🌺

But it’s not only beautiful. Weeping Bottlebrush provides nectar for birds and insects and plays an important role along our waterways, helping to stabilise creek banks and tolerate extended dry periods once established.

You may also know this species by its former name, Callistemon viminalis, or as River Bottlebrush.

Keep an eye out for it as you explore the Enoggera Creek catchment this spring.

🍽️ HOW TO EAT A CANE TOAD, according to an Alderley ibis!

Forget fine dining. This ibis has its own recipe for tackling a cane toad!

👆 Step 1: The flick.
💦 Step 2: The wash.
🔁 Step 3: Repeat as required.
😌 Step 4: Take a short break.
👌 Step 5: A few final preparations before tucking in!

Cane toads are an introduced pest and their toxins can be deadly to many of our native animals. So watching this ibis go about its business is a fascinating reminder that wildlife along our local creeks never stops surprising us!

⚠️ Please don't try this at home! 😄

A huge thanks to Brendan McIntyre from Brisbane City Council for capturing this unusual dining experience at Banks St Reserve in September 2026. 👏

👀 Seen something unusual along your local creek? Tell us about it in the comments! 👇

🌿 Have you spotted Dyschoriste?

Dyschoriste nagchana is one of the 12 worst weeds in the Enoggera catchment. It can spread quickly, forming thick patches that smother other plants.

🔎 Look for: purple or pale lilac tube-shaped flowers, opposite egg-shaped leaves, and spiky flower buds and seed pods.

📸 Think you’ve found it? Take a photo and send it to us or post it in the comments.

🌱 Have you already dealt with Dyschoriste?
We really want to hear what you did — what worked, what didn't, and what would you recommend to others?

Share your photos, sightings and experiences below or get in touch with SOWN at [email protected].
