Why our thicker sleepers are better?
Choosing the right retaining wall material is one of the most consequential decisions in any landscaping or civil project. The wrong choice can mean structural failure, ongoing maintenance costs, or a wall that needs to be rebuilt within a decade. The right choice gives you a wall that performs structurally, suits the site conditions, and still looks good 30 or 40 years from now.
Durawall's structural sleepers are manufactured at **80 mm to 100 mm thick** across the standard range — meaningfully thicker than the 75 mm market standard, and significantly thicker than thinner competing products.
A concrete sleeper is a horizontal structural beam. Its job is to resist bending forces applied by the retained soil pressing against it from behind. The thicker the sleeper, the greater its bending resistance — and the better it performs as soil pressure increases with wall height.
Thickness drives bending strength. This is a fundamental structural principle. For a given concrete strength and reinforcement layout, a thicker sleeper will always outperform a thinner one under load. It resists deflection, and long-term fatigue more effectively.
Durawall engineers and manufactures their sleepers to be slightly thicker than most. By doing this, the sleepers better handle stress, bending and load distribution. Concrete sleeper retaining walls have high structural strength, making them suitable for taller or load-bearing walls and sloped or unstable sites with drainage or soil movement concerns. A thicker sleeper allows customers to build their wall higher as the sleepers can handle more soil pressure and more bending force which means it will not bow or fail as the wall gets higher. A longer lifespan is more likely with a thicker sleeper as the sleepers have more strength, less stress, better reinforcement protection and higher durability allowing it to be stronger against soil pressure, weather and movement.
