🍻 **A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A POOLIE – EPISODE 13**

**THE PARTY THAT NEVER ENDED!** 🎉

Just another Monday morning, arriving at a customer's property to carry out their regular pool service.

As I walked into the backyard, I was greeted by loud music and a rather cheerful bloke sprawled out on a poolside lounge chair, cigarette in hand.

It was my customer.

And judging by the state of him, he'd had a VERY big night! 🍻😂

Turns out he'd been partying all night and hadn't quite realised the weekend was over.

**HE STILL THOUGHT IT WAS SUNDAY!**

As soon as he spotted me, he enthusiastically invited me to pull up a chair, grab a drink and join the party.

"Come on, mate! Stay and have a few beers!"

I laughed and replied,

**"I'd love to, mate, but I've got clients who depend on me!"**

He looked at me like I was the crazy one.

Apparently, going to work on a Sunday was a ridiculous idea.

There was just one small problem…

**"Mate… it's MONDAY!"** 🤣

Not that he seemed particularly concerned.

The music kept playing, the party continued, and I got on with cleaning his pool.

**His Sunday was still going strong. My Monday was already in full swing!**

🐝 A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A POOLIE – EPISODE 12

THE POOL SHED AMBUSH! 🐝

Just another beautiful Brisbane summer's day, going about my usual pool servicing routine.
Headed into the pool shed to check the equipment.
Nothing unusual. Or so I thought…

Unbeknownst to me, a colony of paper wasps had decided the pool shed was the perfect place to set up home.
Unfortunately, nobody had informed me of the new tenants. 😂

I didn't notice them.
BUT THEY DEFINITELY NOTICED ME! 😳

Before I knew what was happening, I was under attack!

One sting. OUCH!
Another sting. OUCH!!
And another… ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! 🐝🐝🐝

What followed was a rather undignified retreat from the pool shed, complete with flailing arms and some very colourful language!

Several painful stings later, with a throbbing ear and tears in my eyes, I'd learnt a valuable lesson.

ALWAYS CHECK FOR PAPER WASPS BEFORE STICKING YOUR HEAD INTO A POOL SHED!

These little blighters are very territorial, and they certainly don't appreciate unexpected visitors.

These days, I'm a LOT more observant when approaching pool equipment, especially during the warmer months.

Pool serviced. Lesson learnt. Dignity slightly damaged. 😂

🌳 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 11

JUST A QUICK POOL SERVICE…

It was the morning after one of Brisbane’s huge summer thunderstorms.

I arrived at a regular customer’s house expecting the usual job — test the water, empty the baskets, vacuum the pool and move on to the next one.

Then I walked into the backyard.

There was a TREE IN THE POOL. 🌳💦

Not a branch.
Not a few storm-damaged leaves.
A TREE.

For a few seconds I just stood there looking at it, trying to work out exactly which part of pool servicing had prepared me for this. 😂

There was no chance I was getting it out by myself, so I called our other pool tech for backup.

What followed was considerably more tree recovery operation than pool service.

Out came the straps.
Out came the ropes.
Out came the pulleys.

We rigged everything up and, between the two of us, slowly managed to haul the tree up and out of the pool.

Success! 💪

Of course, getting the tree out only revealed the mountain of branches, leaves and debris it had left behind.

So after becoming amateur arborists for the morning…

We finally got to be poolies again. 😂

🌳 Tree out.
🧹 Debris cleaned up.
💦 Pool rescued.

🕷️ A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 10
THE CLASSIC AUSTRALIAN SPIDER DANCE
You’re walking down the side of a house towards the pool…
And suddenly —
FACE FULL OF SPIDER WEB. 🕸️
You stumble backwards, wiping web off your face and arms.
Then comes the terrifying realisation…
There WAS a spider in that web.
But where is it now?
You can’t see it.
And that’s when instinct takes over.
Arms start flailing.
Shirt gets slapped.
Back gets smacked.
Neck gets checked.
Hat comes off.
And for the next 30 seconds you perform what every Australian instinctively knows as…
🕷️ THE CLASSIC AUSTRALIAN SPIDER DANCE.🕷️
Eventually you convince yourself the spider probably isn't crawling down the back of your shirt.
Probably.
Hat back on.
Off to clean the pool.

🐶 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 9

The Great Escape

We’d been servicing this pool every four weeks for quite some time when some new tenants moved into the property.

On my next visit, I noticed their wheelie bin had been left in a slightly odd spot — pushed right up against the pool gate.

I moved the bin out of the way, opened the gate and headed into the pool area.

That’s when I discovered why the bin was there. 😂

A little dog suddenly squeezed himself underneath the pool gate and took off like a rocket across the yard.

Straight through a hole in the fence.

Right. Better go get the dog.

I climbed over the fence, caught up with the little escape artist and picked him up.

Problem solved.

Except…

I turned around and looked at the fence I’d just climbed over.

Apparently, the fence was considerably higher from this side.

There was absolutely no way I was getting back over it — particularly while carrying a dog. 🤦‍♂️

So off we went.

A roughly 300-metre walk, carrying someone else’s dog, until I eventually found my way back around to the house.

Dog safely returned. ✅
Hole in the fence temporarily plugged. ✅
Pool service completed. ✅

And suddenly the strange wheelie-bin placement made perfect sense.

Just another completely normal day in the life of a poolie. 😂

🥶 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 8

There are two types of people who get into a swimming pool in the middle of winter.

Very brave people… and pool technicians who have made a terrible mistake.

It was a freezing winter’s day and I was servicing a customer’s pool.
I bent down beside the pool to do something, completely forgetting there was a big landscaping boulder directly behind me.
As I bent down, I backed straight into it.

There was nowhere to go.
No graceful recovery.
No miraculous display of balance.

Just me, the boulder… and the pool.

SPLASH.
Straight in. Fully clothed. 😂

And because apparently falling into a freezing pool wasn’t enough, I still had to climb back out soaking wet and finish the job.

The pool was clean.
My dignity was not.

🐍 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 7

You never quite know what you’re going to find when you lift the lid of a skimmer box.
Leaves? Obviously.
Toads? Fairly regularly.
The occasional pool toy? Sure.
A huge snake? Not ideal.

I lifted the skimmer lid at a customer’s pool one day and discovered a very large, very much alive snake curled up inside.

There was really only one thing to do.
I grabbed the pool broom, carefully fished the snake out of the skimmer and lifted it over the pool fence into the garden.

Problem solved.

Meanwhile, our new employee had taken a slightly different approach to the situation.
He ran for the hills.
Screaming. 😂
Apparently, “dealing with wildlife” hadn't featured prominently enough in the job description.

A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 6 🚙

There are a few things you expect to deal with during a normal day servicing pools.

Leaves.
Green pools.
Broken equipment.
The occasional toad.

Your work ute driving itself into a ditch is generally not one of them.

One of our team had parked the ute on the street while servicing a customer’s pool and headed inside to get to work.

Unfortunately, the handbrake had other ideas.

At some point, the ute began very slowly rolling away on its own.
No driver.
No passengers.
Just the Affordable Pool Service ute casually heading off on an adventure.

Its solo journey didn’t last particularly long.
It ended in a ditch. 😂

Thankfully, nobody was hurt and there was no major damage — although we did learn a valuable lesson:
When parking the work ute, applying the handbrake is important.
Making sure it’s actually engaged is even better.

🎄 A Day in the Life of a Poolie – Episode 5 💵

You never quite know what you’re going to find in a skimmer basket.

Leaves? Absolutely.
Frogs? Occasionally.
Pool toys? All the time.

$500 in cash? That was a new one.

It was just before Christmas when I opened a customer’s skimmer basket and found ten very wet $50 notes sitting amongst the leaves.

For a brief moment, I did wonder if this was some kind of unusually generous Christmas tipping system. 😂

Deciding that was probably unlikely, I carefully pulled the notes out and laid them around the edge of the skimmer on the pavers to dry while I serviced the pool.

When I finished, I gathered up the now considerably less soggy $500 and returned it to the owner.

Mystery solved.

He’d had a Christmas party, jumped into the pool fully clothed in his suit, and apparently forgotten there was $500 cash in his pocket.

The money had escaped, made its way through the pool and eventually been collected by the skimmer.

He was VERY happy to see it again.

And no… sadly, it wasn’t my Christmas tip. 😂
