Reverse Cycle (Heating Mode)
Most modern split systems are reverse cycle, meaning they can heat as well as cool:
• In heating mode, the cycle is reversed.
• The outdoor unit extracts heat from the outside air (even in cold weather) and transfers it inside.

Refrigerant Cycle
• Refrigerant is a special fluid that changes easily between liquid and gas.
• Cycle process:
1. Indoor coil: Refrigerant evaporates → absorbs heat from inside.
2. Compressor: Squeezes refrigerant gas → raises pressure and temperature.
3. Outdoor coil: Refrigerant condenses → releases heat to outdoors.
4. Expansion valve: Drops pressure → refrigerant becomes cold again for next cycle.

A split system air conditioner works by moving heat from inside your room to the outside using refrigeration principles. It’s called “split” because the system is divided into two main parts:

• Located outside the building.
• Contains the compressor, condenser coil, and another fan.
• The compressor pumps refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units.
• The refrigerant carries heat from inside the house to the condenser coil.
• The outdoor fan blows outside air over the coil, releasing the absorbed heat.
