The Mary Celeste drifted across the Atlantic with no one aboard. On December 4, 1872, Captain David Morehouse spotted the ship east of the Azores.

He knew its captain, Benjamin Briggs, and sent sailors to investigate. The ship was seaworthy.

Its cargo, clothing, boots, and pipes were still aboard. But Briggs, his wife Sarah, their young daughter Sophia, and the crew had vanished.

The missing lifeboat offered one frightening clue. Nine red-oak barrels of alcohol were empty.

Red oak can let alcohol v***r escape. The leading modern theory says Briggs may have feared an explosion and ordered everyone into the lifeboat.

A rope trailed behind the Mary Celeste. If that rope parted in rough seas, the lifeboat would have drifted away.

The crew would have been trapped in the open Atlantic, while their ship sailed on without them. The ship reached Gibraltar, but no one solved the mystery.

No crew member ever returned. The Mary Celeste was found empty, yet still capable of sailing.
