Some recent wicking bed installs from around Melbourne.

Each one custom fit to suit the space and how you actually want to use your garden, using a system we’ve pioneered, tested and refined in Melbourne backyards over 16+ years.

Built from untreated, ethically sourced cypress with solid construction and a reservoir that keeps moisture down in the soil profile where it’s needed. Less watering, less often, and more consistent growth.

The result is a growing space that’s easier to manage and more reliable year round, through hot, dry and even wet months.

If you’re thinking about getting your garden sorted, building a bit more resilience, or stepping away from the supermarket fruit and veg aisle, get in touch:

🌿 A solid day on the tools for Adam and Luke, installing this 4-bay compost system at Kensington Neighbourhood Centre.

Built from ethically sourced Cypress Macrocarpa means no chemical treatment, just durable, long-lasting timber!

Each bay is 1 cubic metre, giving plenty of flexibility to build your hot compost piles especially in shared spaces. Removable fronts and dividers make turning easy, while ventilated, lockable lids and rat-resistant features keep things running smoothly.

Compost is where the loop closes. Turning food scraps and garden waste back into healthy soil, ready to grow the next round.

Great for community gardens, schools, and anyone managing a decent amount of organic matter.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your compost setup, head to our website and get in touch.

Luke and Casey have been busy putting their skills to work, building this new front fence and a neat chook day-run for a lovely home in Newport. All made from locally sourced cypress macrocarpa and put together with the same care we use across all our edible garden builds.

We’re best known for our wicking beds, chook systems and edible gardens, but we also take on the little (and not-so-little) details that pull a space together. Fences, gates, custom timber work
it’s all about creating a garden that feels thoughtful, inviting and genuinely enjoyable to spend time in.

If you’ve got a garden idea you’ve been sitting on, reach out. We’re always keen to help shape a space that looks good, works beautifully and makes your backyard a place you’re proud to walk into every day.

🐔 A good chook system should make backyard life easier, cleaner and a whole lot more enjoyable.
At Very Edible Gardens, each house and straw yard is hand made to order in our Brunswick workshop using locally sourced Cypress Macrocarpa, Australian-made Colorbond, and quality stainless and galvanised hardware. They’re solid, built properly and designed to last, so you’re not replacing a flimsy flat-pack every couple of seasons.

🌿 Designed for real day-to-day use.
Our houses have mesh floors to let manure fall straight through, which means far less cleaning and better airflow. Everything is set up to be practical and low-maintenance, whether you’re keeping a small flock or running a bigger backyard system.
Straw yards are custom-built to suit your space, with thoughtful touches like pulley-operated day-run hatches and wide, easy-access gates that make looking after your chooks simple.

🩊 Built for Melbourne backyards
 and Melbourne foxes.
With foxes more active as the weather warms up, a strong system is essential. We dig a protective layer of wire around the perimeter of every straw yard so nothing can dig under. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference to your flock’s safety.

đŸŒ» A long-term addition to your garden.
A well-designed chook system becomes part of the rhythm of your backyard. Healthy chooks, a cleaner coop, and plenty of manure for the veggie beds. Our systems are a proper investment in your edible garden, built ethically and made to last.

If you’re thinking about adding chooks or upgrading an old setup, we’re happy to help.

We’ve finally had a bit of rain and some cooler days, which has been a nice breather before summer properly kicks in. Gardens across Melbourne are loving it, so it’s a great time to get outside and check what’s ready to pick. Broad beans, silverbeet, lettuce and all those fast growers from early spring should be looking good for a harvest right now.

If you’re planting out new summer crops, give your seedlings a solid start with compost and a sprinkle of worm castings. Add mulch to help hold moisture, but keep it slightly back from fresh seedlings to avoid inviting slaters and other little nibblers. If snails are still a problem after the wet weather, try a simple beer trap, or head out on a dewy evening and thin the population the old-fashioned way.

It’s also the perfect moment to make sure your watering setup will cope with the warm weeks ahead. Wicking beds, drip lines and timers all deserve a quick check while the weather’s still mild.

Now is prime time to get your raised wicking beds set up! www.wickingbeds.com.au has you covered for DIY and installed wicking beds by Very Edible Gardens.

đŸŒžâ˜€ïž October is here, and the garden is bursting with life! Melbourne’s green spaces are thriving with warmer days, bursts of sunshine, and refreshing rain showers. Flowers are blooming, and that unmistakable spring energy is in the air, inviting us to step outside and dive into the garden. 🌿

🍃 The first broad beans are being picked, and snow peas are sweet and plentiful. Leafy greens like spinach and lettuce are growing faster than ever, thanks to the perfect mix of sunshine and rain. Crops like rocket and the last of the broccoli are flowering, attracting bees and other pollinators to the garden. đŸđŸŒ±

đŸŒ» Now's a great time to plant annual veggies if you have the space! Check out our list of common varieties you can plant now. Don’t forget, it’s still the perfect time to plant perennial herbs and summer flowers to keep your beneficial insects and pollinators happy. đŸŒŒđŸŒż

🔹 With the list of spring jobs growing, we’ve saved all the details for a blog post on our website. Head to the webpage www.veryediblegardens.com.au for more! đŸŒ±

đŸŒ± Compost education in action! We recently built a four-bay cypress macrocarpa compost system at the Footscray Community Garden and Learning Space, which is already turning excess veggies from a food program next door into marvellous soil. On the weekend, the garden hosted the Climate Adaptation Fair, and we got a chance to run a compost workshop and show the system off at the same time. Thanks to those who came along, and to the National Sustainability Festival and Friends of the Earth for organising the day!

đŸ› ïž We loved seeing this system in action—just like our other compost bays built with ethically sourced, untreated Cypress Macrocarpa. Each bay has removable slats for easy turning, great ventilation for hot composting, and durable mesh to keep pesky rodents away. Think of it as the perfect recipe for transforming kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil!

🌍 At Very Edible Gardens, we’re passionate about teaching communities how to compost effectively and sustainably. That’s why we offer workshops for councils, community gardens, and groups who want to learn all the tips and tricks—from setting up a rat-proof system to turning garden scraps into incredible compost gold.

♻ Whether you’re planning a large public compost hub or a smaller community garden, our custom-built bay systems make it easy to manage waste, cut down on emissions, and keep gardens thriving. By harnessing hot compost methods, you can break down organic matter faster while giving your soil the ultimate boost.
