The details you might miss at first glance.

The subtle textures, thoughtful material choices and quiet moments of craftsmanship that often go unnoticed, yet play an essential role in how a space looks, feels and functions.

It’s these considered elements that bring depth, warmth and character to a space, creating a lasting connection between people, materials and place.

Arkadia | Alexandria, NSW

Great architecture is built through collaboration.

Designed in partnership with DKO Architecture and landscape architects Oculus, Arkadia is a shared vision for a more sustainable, connected way of living.

Bringing together four distinct buildings and communities, the project celebrates its site's history through nearly half a million recycled bricks, while creating generous shared spaces, productive gardens and opportunities for connection.

Arkadia is a reminder of what can be achieved when different perspectives and disciplines come together with a common purpose: creating places that are better for people and the planet.

A home built on hope, resilience and the power of community.

Looking back on the Cobargo Santa Project, we remember the devastating bushfires of January 2020 and the lives, homes and communities forever changed.

In the aftermath, we had the privilege of coming together with an incredible group of builders, suppliers and collaborators to rebuild a home for local RFS firefighter Dave Rugendyke and his wife Barb, who lost everything in the fires.

Designed with simplicity, sustainability and resilience at its heart, the Cobargo Santa Project became something far greater than a house. It was a reminder of what can be achieved through collective generosity, and the importance of creating a place to call home.

We're also reflecting on the moment this special story was shared by in 2021, capturing the people and purpose behind a project that will always hold a special place in our hearts.

In memory of those affected by the 2019–2020 bushfires, and with gratitude to everyone who helped make this project possible.

Bays West International Design Competition Selection

We are delighted to have been selected for the next stage of the Bays West International Design Competition in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, a powerful example of ambitious public sector-led planning and place-making by Bays West GANSW – Government Architect NSW.

Bays West is one of the last strategic pieces of inner harbour land, and one of Sydney’s most extraordinary urban renewal opportunities. Led by the Bays West Delivery Authority, in partnership with the Government Architect NSW, the competition seeks bold and innovative ideas to inform a design-led urban framework for the delivery of up to 8,500 homes, including affordable and essential worker housing. The ambition is not simply to accommodate growth, but to demonstrate how higher density living can create an extraordinary and enduring place.

Our multi-disciplinary team is built on long-standing relationships and a shared ambition for shaping great places, bringing together a strong commitment to positive social and environmental outcomes, international urban design and housing experience and deep local knowledge of Sydney, its harbour and the opportunities that make Bays West such an important project for the city.

Who knew the end of a street could become the heart of a neighbourhood? 🌿

Morning coffees, afternoon strolls, and neighbours crossing paths.

Nestled between The Commons and Nightingale 1, Florence Street Pocket Park brings a little more nature and a lot more life to the streets of Brunswick.

A small space made for the everyday moments that make a neighbourhood.

Sometimes, good design is about what you build. Other times, it’s about the space you give back.

Since 2016, Breathe Architecture has worked alongside Merri-bek Council and the local community to reimagine the end of Florence Street in Brunswick. What was once a desolate stretch of asphalt, designed for cars, has become a green space designed for people.

Tucked between The Commons and Nightingale 1, Florence Street Pocket Park is a reminder that thoughtful design doesn’t always need a grand footprint to make a meaningful impact.

A place where native planting encourages biodiversity, trees offer shade, neighbours find moments to connect, and small businesses can become part of the everyday rhythm of the street.

For us at Breathe, the vision has always extended beyond the buildings themselves. It’s about considering how architecture meets the street, how public spaces invite people to linger, and how even the smallest design decisions can contribute to a stronger, more connected community.

A decade in the making, Florence Street Pocket Park is now a place for people, not cars.

People over cars. 🌿

What happens when you reclaim a desolate asphalt cul-de-sac and give it back to the neighborhood? You get the Florence Street Pocket Park. Over a decade ago, Breathe had a vision to turn the end of Florence Street into a park and along with our neighbours, advocated to council to turn this dead end street into a place for people, not cars. Last weekend it was a dream come true to see the parklet come alive with the community coming together for a long lunch. Thank you to the Merri-Bek Councillors at the time, who recognised what was possible and passed a motion to provide this parklet.

Tucked between The Commons and Nightingale 1, this pocket park trades cars for a pedestrian-friendly space that provides much-needed relief with native trees, grasses, and public seating.

It’s more than just urban cooling; it’s about fostering local connection and providing a safe, walkable space where residents can pause, dogs can play, and you can linger with a morning brew from .deli.

Material selection is about more than how something looks or performs.

At Breathe, we ask questions about where materials come from, what they consume, the value they add, how they perform over time, and what happens to them at the end of their life.

Our Guide to Sustainable Materials brings these questions together across six areas: Why, What, Where, Value, Reflect and Circularity.

It is a framework for making more considered choices - reducing unnecessary material use, prioritising lower-impact options, and designing for longevity, reuse and recovery.

A home shaped by its materials, neighbourhood, and everyday family rituals.

Brick Gable House reimagines the traditional Melbourne backyard addition through a palette of enduring materials. Recycled brickwork connects the home to its streetscape, while timber joinery, natural finishes and carefully framed openings bring warmth throughout.

Designed to age gracefully, the home celebrates texture, permanence and adaptability - reflecting Breathe’s approach to creating spaces deeply connected to place and built for longevity.

A little jewel box in South Melbourne.

An old project that remains a favourite, Bibelot brought together rich colour, pattern and texture to create an interior that felt playful, intimate and a little indulgent.

Mosaic underfoot, curved banquettes, brass details and crafted timber created a sense of richness while still maintaining a feeling of warmth. Every detail was carefully considered, from the smallest finish to the way the spaces unfolded - reflecting the same level of care and craft behind the pastries themselves.
