Transforming tradition: A modern minimalist retreat in Clifton Hill.
For this project, Vos Architecture + Design reimagined a classic, single-fronted Victorian terrace in Melbourne into a light-filled, functional sanctuary tailored for a retired couple.
Our design seamlessly bridges the home's historic charm with a clean, contemporary aesthetic. At the rear, bold, cube-like architectural forms create a striking modern statement, cleverly designed to remain hidden from the streetscape in compliance with local council planning guidelines.
Inside, the ground level now features a refurbished main bedroom suite complete with a custom walk-in robe and ensuite. The heart of the home opens up into an expansive kitchen, meals, and living area, wrapped in warm natural materials that bring texture and soul to the minimalist palette. A massive sliding door blurs the line between inside and out, opening onto a clever rear courtyard that functions as both a lush green open space and a practical parking area using stabilised grass pavers.
Upstairs, the addition introduces two new bedrooms and a central bathroom. One of these rooms has been custom-crafted to serve as an artist’s studio, featuring a south-facing clerestory window that floods the creative workspace with a perfect abundance of indirect natural light.
