𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝒔𝒖𝒃𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒇 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒔

Private Forests Tasmania has recently made submissions to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) regarding the draft new National Environmental Standards.

This feedback complements PFT's participation in the Tasmanian Government working group following the Tasmanian Government formally advising the Australian Government that it wishes to enter into a bilateral agreement which would seek to accredit the Tasmanian Forest Management System (FMS) under part 5 of the EPBC Act.

PFT's submissions focus on highlighting that the Tasmanian Forest Management System should be considered as meeting the new National Environmental Standards through landscape scale management and assessments.

It also highlights that the science behind environmental impact assessments can be complex and there are many examples across Tasmania where a standard approach may not be feasible in implementation.

This is one of many submissions PFT intends to make on behalf of private forest growers in Tasmania to support the representation of private forestry interests in the development of new National Environmental Standards.

Tree Alliance 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 is 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 and available to all 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 who are managing trees (this may be native forest, plantations, shelterbelts, woodlots, environmental plantings and more) on properties greater than 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬 in size. In addition, any Tasmanian farmer or landowner intending to plant and manage trees are eligible to be members.
Most importantly, Tree Alliance members understand and have an appreciation of the 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 of managing 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬.

Signage promoting Private Forests Tasmania's Stems for CO2 project has recently been installed at St Marys!

Alongside the development of articles and sharing the stories of participating farmers, Private Forests Tasmania has continued to work with local businesses to design and install a second shipping container sign at Stems for CO2 participant Alison Napiers property.

The sign is visible for drivers headed both ways on Esk Main Road, with different messages about the project on either side.

The planting sites at the Napier property - including the shelterbelt near to the shipping container signage - were planted late last year and survival assessments were undertaken in early 2026. As an unfortunate result of drought death, it has been determined that some infill planting will need to take place and this is scheduled for early winter.

As part of Alison's Stems for CO2 project, 104 hectares of Radiata pine is being established across both a plantation and a series of strategically placed shelterbelts.

We have been pleased to see our 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 gate signs up across the state!

If you have seen a gate sign whilst out and about across the state, note that these properties make up Private Forests Tasmania's 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.

The Tree Alliance community has a strong but simple purpose - to bring together 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 who support 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬.

𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 to the Tree Alliance is 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞, and members receive a gate sign for their property, a quarterly storybook which is posted to them and an invite each year to a networking event.

Private Forests Tasmania’s Carbon Forestry 101 project aims to educate, build awareness, understanding and confidence amongst Tasmanian farmers and landowners about carbon forestry.

PFT will generate a variety of resources and tools and run a series of events aimed at educating farmers and landowners about carbon forestry - what it is, how it works, the opportunities and the risks.

These resources and events will cover the science of carbon forestry, carbon methodologies, carbon markets, governance, and sustainability bringing all information together into one space, and in a language which removes complexity and prioritises the landowners need-to-know.

Private Forests Tasmania is excited to share that we have now welcomed more than 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 to our 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.

The Tree Alliance is bringing together Tasmanian farmers and landowners with properties greater than 5 hectares in size who agree that managing trees on farms is a win-win for the environment, society and sustainability.

Collectively, our 100+ members manage more than 10,000 hectares of land across Tasmania, with 66 members managing native forest, 53 managing plantations and 42 managing environmental plantings (*noting many members manage more than one type of forest).

👋🌲Agfest 2026!

Private Forests Tasmania attended Agfest with TasFarmers last week and had a great time engaging with stakeholders about private forestry.

We launched our Carbon Forestry 101 project, welcomed new members to our Tree Alliance, networked and met with lots of stakeholders seeking information about harvesting potential for native and plantation forests, establishment of shelterbelts, Private Timber Reserves and more.

It was great seeing so many stakeholders take interest in our upcoming priority projects. Thank you to Forico for donating 1,000 Radiata pine seedlings for our Carbon Forestry 101 launch, and to the stakeholders we shared them with - we were excited to hear that some were to be planted in shelterbelts on farms!

Trees protect farms from heat, rain and wind. This brings a range of benefits, including reducing stress on animals and crops. By planting trees for shelter, you can boost your farm's productivity in many ways:

• Animals – shelter reduces livestock mortality and improves growth rates
• Crops – shelter reduces damage to crops, improves soil fertility and extends growing seasons
• Water – shelter reduces evaporation and improves irrigator efficiency in paddocks
• Farm – shelter protects buildings and work areas and helps to control fire.

𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡
Healthy soil is the key to your farm's productivity. But some farming activities can degrade soil over time. Use trees to improve soil health in the following ways:

• Erosion – Trees control wind speed, intercept rainfall, bind soils and control groundwater levels. This prevents soil erosion, landslip and the loss of fertile top soils.
• Fertility – Trees drop leaves, twigs and branches, which gives nutrients to the soil. Trees also provide habitat for animals that turn soils for nutrient cycling.
• Salinity – Trees intercept rainfall and uptake water from the ground. This controls groundwater flow and reduces the risk of salinisation (where excess salts gather in the soil surface).

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚'𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫

The Tasmanian Forest Industry Fire Management Committee (FIFMC), has released the Fire Prevention Guidelines for Tasmania’s Private Plantations.

The guidelines provide a voluntary, good practice framework to support fire prevention planning across Tasmania’s larger private plantation estate. They have been developed collaboratively by industry and fire management stakeholders to help reduce the risk of bushfires impacting plantations, neighbouring landholders, public assets and local communities.

The FIFMC is an industry led committee that brings together private plantation managers, forest industry representatives, and fire agencies to improve fire prevention, preparedness, and coordination across Tasmania’s forested landscapes. The Committee plays a key role in sharing knowledge, aligning practices where appropriate and supporting proactive approaches to bushfire risk management for the forest industry.

The guidelines focus on fire prevention rather than fire response and cover key aspects of plantation design, management and operations, including firebreaks, access and water points, setbacks from built assets, and guidance on planned burning and stakeholder engagement. The intent is to support consistent, risk based decision making while recognising the diversity of plantation ownership, scale, and operating contexts across Tasmania.

Importantly, the guidelines are voluntary and are intended to complement, not replace, existing legal and regulatory requirements. Plantation managers remain responsible for compliance with the Forest Practices Act, the Forest Practices Code, fire permitting arrangements and any other applicable obligations, regardless of whether they choose to adopt the guidelines in full or in part.

Darryn Crook, Chair of the FIFMC said the guidelines reflect the collaborative effort of the forest industry and fire management partners to strengthen fire prevention across Tasmania’s private plantation estate.

“They are intended to provide practical guidance that supports better risk management outcomes, while recognising that plantation managers operate in different environments and remain subject to existing regulatory frameworks.”
