Getting ready to reno? Here's what to keep in mind:
1. FLOOR PLAN FLOW
How people move through your home and can your new floor plan minimise turns, bottlenecks or excessive steps while working on a task. Pay particular attention to high frequency tasks - can people move behind or around you while you are cooking, doing dishes or unpacking the dishwasher? Consider moving components like doors for functionality, safety and privacy - does the door open to offer privacy to the toilet, can you easily move around the shower door when it is in the open position etc.
2. FIXTURES & FINISHES
You can get away with using more than one finish - e.g. brass lights and door hardware with matt black tapware, but try to avoid combining too many finishes. Repetition of colours or materials between spaces will create a more cohesive look throughout your home. E.g. the same colour joinery and tapware in your kitchen as your bathroom.
3. FURNISHING
Repetition: As with fixtures, repetition is your friend here. Choose one or two accent colours that can be repeated throughout your home, such as across dining chairs, occasional chairs, cushions, feature tiles, bed linen etc. to create a harmoniously cohesive feel.
Proportion: Your home will feel more spacious and balanced when your furniture is the right proportion. Go larger rather than smaller for rugs and pendants, but smaller rather than larger for furniture. Consider an extendable dining table to allow more room around the table when not entertaining and remember that positioning lounges a little off the wall will make your room feel bigger.
