This is our vetiver grass plantation.

SPACING:
• Three slips planted 40cm apart across the row.
• Distance between rows is approximately 115m - just enough to get a ride-on mower in between.

As per a previous post, we're now creating wider spaces between rows so we can trim the vetiver with a tractor and side-cutter attachment.

This brown-banded hunter hawkmoth (Theretra silhetensis) was resting on a bundle of vetiver grass slips. It was relocated and almost disappeared into the surroundings.

Our vetiver plantation has grown so much and it's a LOT of work to trim regularly using people power and hand-held hedge trimmers. So, we are eliminating some rows and will be getting a side cutter for the tractor so we can trim more efficiently!

Does vetiver grass grow in full shade? The truth is, unfortunately, it struggles.

If vetiver grass gets half a day of full sunlight then it will be fine. Or filtered sunlight (e.g. under a tree canopy) is okay, if at least 50% comes through... the more the better.

It's vital to consider sunlight when deciding where to plant the vetiver.

The vetiver grass in this location in the video, was planted about 20 months ago and were trimmed 12 months ago. They are in the same soil type and received the same amount of water. The main difference is the sun exposure.

We often get asked how wide one vetiver grass clump will grow. We dug-up a plant that was 3 years and 3 months old, then measured it.

NOTE: This was grown in ideal soil and water conditions in our plantation in a subtropical climate.
