Test your safety switches every 3 months to make sure they’re working correctly.

Safety switches reduce the risk of an electric shock if there’s a fault in your electrical wiring or electrical equipment.

This photo was sent to us from one of our electrical inspectors – a builder without an electrical licence removed a backyard flood light so the homeowner could plug in a different light fitting.

The earthing conductor insulation was not stripped before terminating it at the socket terminal and the earth socket tested open circuit.

Although the light fitting plugged into the socket worked, it would be dangerous for any electrical equipment to be plugged into the socket.

An electrical worker received an electric shock from an unterminated cable that had been left exposed and unidentified before a building’s demolition.

An investigation revealed the electrical contractor had insufficient testing and lock out and tag out procedures.

The Electrical Licensing Committee suspended the contractor’s licence for six months. The contractor must have an approved electrical safety system audit on the business from an independent auditor, and the QTPs must complete training in relevant competency units, prior to the suspension being lifted. The contractor also received both a reprimand and penalty.

Did you know…it’s not just electric cars that use lithium batteries - many remote-control cars, other toys and portable household equipment also use them.

In the image below, this RC wasn’t recharged properly, and the battery cells expanded and exploded.

Always be cautious when charging your RCs, or any other battery powered toys and equipment. Make sure you:
• follow manufacturer’s instructions for use and charging
• turn the power off before plugging and unplugging your devices
• only use a battery charger specified by the manufacturer (don’t mix and match different batteries and chargers not specified by the manufacturer of the RC, other toy or other equipment)
• only use batteries or battery packs specified by the manufacturer (don’t buy no-name replacement battery packs off the internet)
• don’t leave the batteries on charge unless the manufacturer’s instructions indicate it is safe to do so (turn off the power once the batteries are fully charged)
• charge the batteries on a solid surface with clear space to allow heat dissipation (don’t charge device on bedding or where it may be accidently covered in clothes, papers or other flammable debris).

Top tip number two is to never DIY electrical work. This includes both plug-in appliances and permanent electrical equipment like the hot water system.

Always get a licensed electrical contractor to do any electrical work and you can check that the contractor has a current licence at electricalsafety.qld.gov.au
