The hole and discolouration from the remains of an original survey post (OSP) placed in 1891. Awesome find this week after scrambling uphill (hands and knees). The original post, cut onsite from a nearby tree, would have looked similar to the sketch with about 0.4m above ground and about 0.6m buried. The original surveyor deemed the line inaccessible from this point. Original survey marks, or remnants of them, defining your land boundaries are often there if you know where to look. We often get enquiries where people think surveying is expensive. But what is your property worth? What is it worth to you to ensure you know where your boundaries are? Do you know the implications if you build over your boundaries? There is a lot involved to reinstate your property boundaries from the initial engagement, pre-office calculations, performing the field survey and producing the survey plan to provide accuracy and certainty to the location of your boundaries. I think a recent client summarises it best "engaging a land surveyor is the cheapest insurance to ensure the build goes smoothly".

Fences are often close to the boundary, but not always on the boundary. If you are building do not rely on offsets from a fence. This fence has been constructed near the boundary, but this is not always the case. If you need to know where your boundaries are, you need a boundary identification survey by a Registered Cadastral Surveyor.
