TIp of the Day!

Thermocouple Lead identification chart below
ANSI also works in Australia

This is to help you get the correct thermocouple for your kiln incorrect thermocouples can cause over fires, if controller is setup for type K and you use a Type N thermocouple you will over fire by about 100 degrees C controller will read 1200 Deg C but actual temperature will be 1300 Deg C .
So always use the correct thermocouple to suit controller setup.

Good kiln maintenance is very important for optimum kiln firing performance as is checking your elements . Great info from aakilns

I have discussed with kiln owners explaining pitted surface, rough feel and stretch marks which is all part of ageing elements. As the elements gradually wear out the power output also decreases which limits the maximum temperature attainable. The higher the temperature used for firing the faster the elements wear out. The element does not have to break or burn out to be replaced. This is more to do with worn elements being pushed hard to try to achieve the target temperature with element coils bunching together and collapsing.

This beautiful Portland Wedgwood Vase in black and white Jasperware, circa 1916, is a duplicate of the Roman cameo glass vase, dated between AD 1 and AD 25. Josiah Wedgwood personally dedicated four years to perfecting the duplicate, which owes its current name to the Duchess of Portland, who owned the original vase for a period of time.

This piece will be on view at our Sydney space this weekend, ahead of our Decorative Arts auction on Tuesday 23 October, 6pm.

Types of Kilns
Kilns are where the magic of pottery happens. The process of firing turns clay into ceramics and your raw work of art into a finished masterpiece. While early kilns consisted of a bonfire over a hole in the ground, technology has vastly improved to create sophisticated ceramic kilns. How a ceramic piece is fired has a huge impact on the look of the finished result. Kilns are freestanding, and their size can range from the size of a stove to a full room. The three most common types of kilns are electric and gas . Electric kilns are probably the most common type of kiln used in ceramics. They're comparatively inexpensive, and small ones can plug directly into a 120-Volt wall socket, making them accessible to small pottery operations. Gas kilns run on natural gas and fire in reduction, which doesn't allow oxygen in during firing. Raku kilns are another type of specialty kiln that yields a specific finish. Raku pottery is heated until it's glowing, and then pulled with tongs out of the kiln. After it cools, the piece is immersed in cold water, creating a crackle effect. Unglazed areas of the clay become black from the carbon in the burning fuel, and when the carbon is scrubbed off, a bright metallic finish is revealed.
