Here is a perfect example of do it once do it right. Upon a site visit it was evident that these walls were not installed to any standard that I’m aware of and it only got worse once we started removing the bottom retaining wall.
Zero drainage components including no geo-fabric no angular drainage rock and no aggline. Backfill material used was simply existing soil or fill straight against the timber. Zero drainage in front of the wall which seen water and wet soil eventually rotting out the bottom of the timber posts. The timber posts themselves were only in a .350 x .9 deep footing with a max wall height of 1.2m. Space between posts were 1.2m needless to say even without the top wall and fence combination sitting above the bottom wall it was destined to fail. Also there was zero engineering done for the base wall. The wall above has been tied back upon engineers inspection prior to me getting involved with this project, but again wasn’t engineered before the initial construction.

Another concern was the way I was informed how a potential contractor had informed the client of how they may go about removing the wall if they were engaged to carry out the work. It was proposed to remove the top fence line of the upper wall and sit a machine directly on top of the wall attempting to dig out the lower wall due to the access between the house and the existing wall. To get that type of reach you would of needed a 5t machine minimum to reach the bottom wall. 5t excavators sitting directly on top of any retaining walls is not the smartest idea let alone a wall that is in a failure state.

Hey guy’s we have just completed this front yard make over. This job was one of the hardest we have undertaken too date.
Access was the main issue with restricted space, ground conditions eg (rock) and the actual weight of these particular blocks being 38kg per unit posed a physical challenge under the site conditions.
If anyone is requiring some specialised landscaping work make sure you contact a qualified,licensed and insured company. Qualified, licensed and insured companies must guarantee the structural integrity of their work (you wouldn’t buy a car without 5 years warranty, this is the same concept when hiring a tradesman).
