As an Electrician in the North Midlands, I have seen many houses that have wiring and switchboards that are in need of replacement.
If you have an old federation board with Bakelite fuses (see pic) you are well overdue an upgrade and rewire. These boards probably have wiring that is over 70 years old, and not safe.
Cables of this age will have insulation breaking down, leaving exposed and dangerous bare wires (see pic)
These systems provide little to no protection against damage or electric shook, and are way behind current standards, requiring safety switches on all final sub circuits in new installations and additions. (see link)
