💡 Common Air Conditioning Myth #3

"Closing ceiling vents and turning off a zone are the same thing."

Many homeowners think they do the same job, but they don't.

Have you ever been told to close the ceiling vents in unused rooms?

💡 Common Air Conditioning Myth #2

"My air conditioner has stopped heating on a cold morning. It must be broken."

On cold winter mornings, it's normal for frost to form on the outdoor unit while your air conditioner is operating in heating mode. To keep the system running efficiently, it will occasionally enter a defrost cycle.

During this process, the system temporarily changes the direction of the refrigerant flow to warm the outdoor coil and melt the frost. As a result, the indoor unit may briefly stop blowing warm air, or the indoor fan may slow down or stop for a few minutes.

Once the frost has cleared, the system automatically returns to normal heating.

So, if your air conditioner pauses briefly on a frosty Canberra morning, don't panic—it may simply be doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Have you ever noticed your air conditioner going into defrost mode?

💡 Common Air Conditioning Myth #1
"Just buy the biggest unit you can afford."

One of the most common mistakes is focusing only on the size of the air conditioner while overlooking the ductwork design.

A ducted system is only as good as the airflow it can deliver. Poorly sized ducts, insufficient return air, or poorly positioned outlets can lead to:

❌ Hot and cold spots between rooms

❌ Excessive noise from vents

❌ Reduced comfort

❌ Higher running costs

❌ Unnecessary strain on the system

The right ducted system isn't just about choosing the right air conditioner - it's about designing the entire airflow system to suit your home.

Not every issue is visible until someone takes a closer look.
Routine maintenance and inspections can help identify hidden problems before they affect your home’s comfort or develop into more costly repairs.

Most Air Conditioners Don't Fail Overnight — They Gradually Lose Performance

💡 "My air conditioner still turns on, so it doesn't need servicing."

This is one of the most common misconceptions we come across.

Unlike a car, an air conditioner doesn't usually stop working overnight. Performance often declines gradually over time, making it difficult to notice.

Dust, pollen, pet hair and everyday household contaminants can build up on filters, coils and internal components. As this buildup increases, you may start to notice:

❄️ Reduced cooling performance in summer

🔥 Reduced heating performance in winter

💨 Weaker airflow from outlets

⚡ Higher electricity consumption

🤧 Increased dust and odours indoors

Many homeowners only think about servicing when the system no longer heats or cools as expected. By then, the issue may have been developing for quite some time.

Regular air conditioner hygiene maintenance helps keep your system clean and operating efficiently throughout Canberra's changing seasons.

When was the last time your air conditioner was professionally cleaned?

Frequently Asked Question
Q: What size split system do I need for my room?
A: The right size depends on more than just the room's floor area. Factors such as ceiling height, insulation, window orientation, and how the space is used all influence the appropriate system size. We can assess your space and recommend a system that's properly sized for your heating and cooling needs.

Our Canberra Story: Solving Real Problems

Living through our local climate, we know our air conditioning systems are among the hardest-working appliances in our homes. From freezing winter frosts to scorching summer heatwaves, we rely on them year-round.

Over time, I noticed two common challenges facing many Canberra homeowners and landlords.

First, many systems quietly accumulate dust, musty odours, and mould inside the unit, which can affect indoor comfort and reduce system efficiency without homeowners realising it.

Second, finding a reliable local specialist who prioritises quality workmanship, professional installations, and transparent, flat-rate preventative maintenance services can be surprisingly difficult.

That's exactly why I founded Capital KAir. I wanted to build a specialised local business focused on doing a few things exceptionally well, rather than trying to do everything.
