In 1955 Canberra, it was described as "typical of the fine dwellings developed to suit both the heat of summer, when temperatures rise over 100 degrees Fah., and the frosty winter when snow falls on the hills outside the National Capital. Big windows let in the maximum of sun and ample fireplaces, in addition to electric heating, provide for the winter months".
It was the home of the High Commissioner for Canada, on Mugga Way at Red Hill.

Do you recognise this well-known Canberra establishment from this 1950s image?
Yes, it's the Brassey Hotel, photographed by R.C. (Richard) Strangman, who was originally from Tumut.
Strangman, who became a commercial photographer in 1927, went on to document the growth of the new capital for 30 years.
