"[C]ulture, in its manifold expressions ranging from cultural heritage to creative industries, from sustainable tourism to cultural infrastructure, drives and enables the social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainable development," the UN was reminded this week.

“All countries are looking for effective strategies to foster transformative change, building on the lessons of the Millennium Development Goals," UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova told her audience. "Sustainable development calls for ownership. This is where culture can help, to foster participation, to craft a more balanced and meaningful development model for the people, by the people.”

Our Sustainable Landscape Futures conference in Canberra in July will re-affirm such views as we talk about "Solving complex sustainability problems through the Natural and Social Sciences, the Arts, and the Humanities."

One of three University of Canberra scholars who contributed to the recent International Panel on Climate Change (IPCCP) report, Professor Barbara Norman, will be a keynote speaker at the Sustainable Landscape Futures Conference.
Barbara foresees drastic consequences from anthropogenic climate disruption in our region and warns that, without an adaptation strategy, Australia is "playing with fire".

The 2014 Sustainable Landscapes Conference is a response to the UN Millennium Development Goals [See http://www.unesco.org/bsp/eng/mdg and http://www.un.org/en/ecosoc/about/mdg] and the UN's Post-2015 Agenda [See http://en.unesco.org/post2015/].

Many devilishly complex problems remain to be solved to ensure that the Millennium Development Goals are met. These include poverty, food security, disease, energy production, management of our water and environmental resources, controlling disease, mitigating natural and human-induced disasters and conflicts and the challenge of fostering sustainable development.

Please join us at this important joint UNESCO - University of Canberra event, hosted by UC's Faculty of Arts and Design, to explore some of these problems and offer solutions to them. University of Canberra, 10-11 July, 2014.

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education – have been a milestone in global and national development efforts. The framework has helped to galvanize development efforts and guide…
