Plant spotlight: Ligularia reniformis

Its generous, sculptural leaves create a lush backdrop to any border. In summer, tall stems of golden-yellow flowers rise above the foliage, adding height and a bright seasonal accent.

Designer tip: Plant Ligularia in rich soil ideally in partial or dappled shade and protected from hot or coastal winds. It pairs well with so many options, buxus balls or topiary, jasmine, tree underplanting or on mass like we have used here.

Pool renovations, what are my options?

An existing pool can often be completely transformed — changing the shape, size, depth and overall look while working with what’s already there, which is exactly what we did at project Goobarah.

It can be a great way to create a much better connection between the pool, architecture and landscape — and potentially save considerably compared with building a new pool from scratch.

The rear planting at Willarong features screening palms combined with lush, deep-green underplanting. We also added some sculptural cacti that punctuates the soft gaura, echoing the form of the pool fence.
