Our Melbourne team sharing knowledge among peers and mentees at the recent Vine Mentoring event, run by Parlour + Bespoke Careers.

In the words of Ellin Minogue, Graduate Architect in Retail & Hospitality:

"As a graduate representative I was able to connect students and recent graduates with mentors from ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, be mentored by industry professionals and provide insights to students and recent graduates about my experience so far. It was a deeply valuable experience and a great way to enrich my personal practice and the early stages of my career. I highly encourage everyone to get involved with the variety of events hosted by Parlour, and can't wait to attend more in the future."

Participants across all levels had a great time mentoring and being mentored, with a focus on connecting experienced perspectives with emerging talent.

With thanks to Nicole Tan and Sofya Savenkova for organising the session, Alexander Salem for photography and event hosts, Architectus.

Our work on the Thomas Carr College Masterplan is designed to shape the future of the school, with Stage 1 introducing VCE learning hubs with specialist science labs alongside technology workshops.

Their updated VCE Centre provides flexible spaces that support tertiary learning, with contemporary faith-based symbolism vibrantly integrated throughout the school. Buildings arranged around the Central Plaza enhance campus connectivity and strengthen social indoor-outdoor flow.

Last week our Sydney team joined Woolworths Group, Mainbrace Constructions Pty Ltd, Liverpool City Council and Nathan Hagarty MP in celebrating the commencement of construction for Austral North Woolworths, a new mixed-use town centre designed to serve the growing Austral community.

Guided by a meaningful engagement process undertaken alongside Traditional Owners, and informed by the NSW Government's Connecting with Country framework, the project brings together a full-line Woolworths supermarket, specialty retail and commercial uses within a single integrated precinct, creating a vibrant destination that supports the area's continued growth.

The multi-level development will provide:
• A full-line Woolworths supermarket with Direct to Boot
• Retail and commercial premises to support around 30 local businesses
• Two convenient parking options - an 80+ space street-level car park for quick visits and a 250+ space basement car park for longer stays
• A walkable centre with a pedestrian link connecting neighbourhoods, shops and a welcoming public square

Inspired by Country, the material palette draws on the colours and textures of the surrounding landscape, while feature lighting elements reinterpret the organic linework of local scribbly gum bark patterns.

We're proud to be collaborating with our project partners to help deliver a connected, community-focused destination that will support Austral's next chapter of growth.

In an area of outer suburban growth, with proximity to the Northern Hospital and highly anticipated New Epping Medical (currently in construction), New Epping Punthill is a place where people from all walks of life can conveniently access healthcare.

To welcome visiting families, professionals, and those in need of treatment themselves, there is thought stitched into every detail of architecture and interiors.

“We wanted to create somewhere that felt immediately comfortable, that was connected to its environment, and could be easily used as a home base,” says Michelle Cavicchiolo, Senior Associate Interior Designer at ClarkeHopkinsClarke.

It was important for all the shared spaces at New Epping Punthill to leave a lasting impression. Custom joinery at reception is purposefully designed to meet the client’s specific needs - including storage as well as a tea and coffee service, which enables a thoughtful hospitality experience on arrival.

We designed the gym, outdoor terraces and conference rooms with flexible operations front of mind, to support a wide variety of end users and help staff deliver an efficient, thorough service. All of these are oriented toward expansive green surrounds, reaching out to nearby eucalyptus trees and grassy plains beyond.

Rooms furnished with generous seating areas, featuring bathtubs, and kitchens with integrated appliances, allow people to cook, do their laundry, and simply feel at home.

‘When you sit down with residents and ask, ‘How would you use this space?’, they show you things you’d never think of. Good design doesn’t have to cost more – it just has to make people’s lives joyful.’

James Kelly, Co-Managing Partner at ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects shares our thoughtful approach to Aged Care: creating communities where elderly Australians can feel supported, valued, and truly at home.

This project was delivered in partnership with Orbost Regional Health and SJ Higgins Group, with thanks to VIDA Health.

We’re proud to have supported the delivery of the Public Sector Residential Aged Care facility for Cohuna District Hospital – a project designed to bring dignity, comfort and connection to older Victorians in the region.

The purpose-built facility includes 16 aged care beds based on the innovative small household model, with private ensuites and welcoming shared spaces that create a genuine sense of home. Alongside this, eight acute care beds provide integrated access to medical support close to community.

Inspired by the surrounding natural landscape, the design maximises daylight, open views and calm, restorative spaces that support wellbeing. With a strong focus on dementia-friendly design and ageing in place, this new facility reflects the importance of keeping people connected to family, care and country.

A meaningful step forward for inclusive, future-focused regional care.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, Cohuna District Hospital and Fairbrother Construction.

We are incredibly proud of our Partner, Ngaio Chalmers, who has recently been made a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects!

As a practice leader and a mother of two, Ngaio has brought both lived experience and strategic insight to shaping more supportive pathways for people and families in our profession.

Ngaio is a strong advocate for inclusivity, engagement and co-design, and community focused to her core. She is the Chair of the Architecture + Design industry’s RAP RING (Reconciliation Industry Network Group), a non-Indigenous member of ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects’ First Nations Design group working to embed designing with respect for Country into commercial practice, recently joined the AIA Gender, Equity and Diversity Committee, and actively driven a number of our internal policies regarding Equity and Diversity.

She played a key role in creating ClarkeHopkinsClarke’s progressive Parental Leave Policy, launched in 2022, helping advance a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture for our team and the wider industry.

Throughout her 20-year career across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, Ngaio’s experience has been enriched by informal mentorship, and she is in turn generous in supporting others: mentoring colleagues and contributing formally through the Property Council’s 500 Women in Property program.

Through her work as a practice leader in our Community and Culture team, Ngaio continually champions safer spaces, both in the built environment and in the way we communicate, collaborate and engage. Working across diverse cultures and building typologies, she brings careful consideration to questions of cultural safety, security and belonging, particularly in our work with First Nations communities.

Her Fellowship recognition reflects not only her enthusiastic and wide-ranging professional contribution, but also her ongoing commitment to inclusive practice, meaningful mentorship and architecture’s capacity to serve communities with care. Please join us in congratulating Ngaio on this well-deserved milestone.

Last month, we opened our doors to a lively group from the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School MITS, as part of a big Design Day Out.

First stop on their excursion: EMERGENCE[Y] - an exciting exhibition by our neighbours at the Science Gallery, on climate crises and the importance of learning from First Nations custodians in caring for Country. Then upstairs to the ClarkeHopkinsClarke kitchen for a hands-on workshop, exploring the connection between architecture and Country.

Welcomed by our Associate and First Nations lead, James Gililand, students learned to think like an architect, considering how places can make people feel, move and belong.

Students left with a polaroid of their creations in a folding frame, full of prompts to look out at the world as Country-conscious architects. A small memento designed by the CHC team.

Special thanks to the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School for making our first-ever Design Day Out a blast! Looking at all the amazing places students created, we were blown away by their curiosity and creativity.

Huge thanks to our team – James Gilliland, Holly Winch, Kane Waters, Stephanie Wan, Ngaio Chalmers, Isabella Peppard Clark, Kath Dolan, Sandra Tan and Olivia Gallichan for your care in crafting a fun-filled time for all.

Thanks also to the team at Science Gallery Melbourne and our partners The University of Melbourne for another fulfilling collaboration in support of First Nations futures. Our Design Day Out grew from conversations and connections made through Alison Page's recent Creative Shape Shifter exhibition, with educational resources sponsored by ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects.
