Are your ears still recovering from the New Years Eve fireworks display? Hope they’re prepared for the world’s loudest insects as they start to sing! This Tuesday Tails we’re giving a big shout out (quite literally) to Cicadas!
Did you know that the song of some species can be as loud 120 Decibels! That’s as loud as a jet plane taking off and is almost at the pain threshold for human ears! It’s all for love though - only male cicadas sing to attract females. The sound is generated when the male cicada ‘buckles’ a specialised structure in their abdomen called a tymbal.
Here are some more ‘trilling’ cicada facts:
• Cicadas spend most of their life underground, only emerging at the last part of their life cycle.
• They drink plant sap using a long, sharp feeding apparatus.
• Many Australian cicada species were named by children in colonial times, hence the many colourful names still in use such as Greengrocer, Black Prince, Floury Baker, Ruby Tuesday and Cherry Nose.
Which is your favourite?
There are several ways you can help protect and improve biodiversity in your own backyard and local environment:
• Plant locally native trees or shrubs
• Leave natural leaf litter as this provides ideal habitat for native invertebrates
• Keep cats indoors, especially at night.
• Join one of our Environmental Volunteer groups – find one near you at https://hubs.la/Q02dZ3rs0
