Snowy Hydro

Snowy Hydro This is the official page for the iconic Snowy Hydro Limited. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is part our nation's heritage.

From generation to wholesale and retail, Snowy Hydro is an Australian-owned end-to-end energy company that has been at the centre of Australian energy reliability since the development of the Snowy Scheme began more than 75 years ago.

For the Dean family, the Snowy project is more than just a job, it’s a legacy ❤️

With their grandfather and father having worked on the early Snowy Scheme, Tim and Hunter Dean are now proudly working side by side to deliver Snowy 2.0, one of the most important energy projects in Australia’s history.

It’s a unique mix of hard work, heritage, and plenty of good natured banter while helping to build Australia’s biggest battery 🔋

Happy Father’s Day, fellas! Thank you for your hard work.

To generate electricity for millions of Aussie homes, you have to engineer and build some pretty impressive stuff! 👷‍♀️🏗️🚧

Snowy 2.0’s incline pressure shaft is one example of the engineering complexity, staggering scale and relentless ambition involved in building Australia’s biggest battery 🔋.

This 1.6km long, 10 metre diameter tunnel will drop water down an elevation of 700 metres, gaining speed and building pressure before spinning turbines and generating electricity for your home, your business and/or your sweet EV that you just got and you’ve been dying to talk about it in a work setting… 👀

Some world first technology is being used to bring this together too! The concrete segments used to line the tunnel will actually get stronger under pressure… amazing.

Snowy 2.0 will change the game for Aussie energy security and reliability. By storing energy when it’s abundant, and sending it out when it’s needed, we will provide electricity for you when it’s needed most… oh and it means that excess solar and wind energy won’t be wasted. Beautiful!

Constructing a mega project with a design life of 150 years, benefitting generations is pretty bloody hard work! But this is bigger than all of us, and we are fired up to get the job done.

Nearly 1km underground deep in the Australian Snowy Mountains, two MASSIVE caverns are being excavated to house Snowy 2.0’s power station complex.

The excavation of this space is nearly complete, and we are gearing up to begin the next stage of construction.

The size of these caverns is hard to illustrate, let alone grasp... but to put it in perspective, they could fit the Sydney Opera House inside of them.

This is where the magic will happen. Snowy 2.0s underground power station will harnessthe power of water and gravity to power millions of aussie homes.

It’s an asset that is designed to last 150 years, and that generational impact is not lost on us. Our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will benefit from the work we are doing here.

It will be, after all, Australia’s biggest battery!

Here’s our man Grant from Snowy 2.0’s Lobs Hole construction site to give you some more info on what comes next.

Working in a remote environment means we have to be ready for anything 🏔️🛣️🚨

With a 90-minute to two-hour response time out here at Snowy 2.0, keeping the team safe while we help build Australia’s biggest battery requires a serious setup.

At our Lobs Hole, Ma**ca and Tantangara worksites, we have our own Emergency Response Team to respond to incidents 24/7.

25 permanent staff and 150 volunteers help look after the legends delivering one of the most complex and large-scale feats of engineering in Australia’s history.

But it’s not only our people that we help. Last year, the team assisted NSW Ambulance in responding to a motorcycle accident on the Snowy Mountains Highway, because they were able to respond quickly and had the right equipment.

There’s nothing more Australian than helping someone in need, and to be able to do it while constructing an aussie owned asset designed to last 150 years… it’s a good feeling! 🇦🇺❤️☺️

Snowy Hydro Snow Scraping ASMR!! 💆‍♀️

It was a chilly start to the morning in the Snowy Hydro Cabramurra Township, but safety first!

We have a saying in the Snowy’s, when there’s ice and snow, take it slow.

Just an example of what makes working on Snowy 2.0 a unique challenge, but one we are up for 💪

Some epic scenes from Jindabyne Dam, as we release water into the Snowy River!

These releases are designed to help improve the long term health of the river system.

As well as this release in July, there will also be high flow releases in August and September. These releases are designed to better mimic the natural flow of the rivers that occurred before the construction of the Snowy scheme.

You can’t build a massive, game changing pumped hydro project that will power Australia for generations without some massive pieces of kit! ⚙️🏗️🔧

Some ginormous hydro compontents have started to arrive out our Snowy 2.0 worksite, in preparation for installation into our massive power station nearly 1km underground.

They’re big, they’re heavy and they are crucial to the operation of what will be Australia’s biggest battery! 🔋

Check it out!

Did you know that last financial year, 12,000 students learned about the wonders of STEM through the Snowy Stem Academy!?

At Snowy Hydro, we have a responsibility to raise the next generation of renewable energy superheroes, and the Snowy STEM academy is just one of the ways we engage students in science, technology engineering and maths.

Come behind the scenes with Snowy team member Poppy, as we visit Sacred Heart School Corryong.

The days can be long, but if it means we can inspire the next generation of renewable energy workers... it’s all about worth it!
