☠️⚡⚠️Here’s 11,000 reasons why attaching signs to power poles is a no-no.

Someone narrowly escaped with their life in Brisbane today this afternoon after plugging a staple through an 11,000 volt cable – you can see the scorch marks on the stapler and the sign. It also cut power to 1300 customers.

We're tired of saying it, but for those at the back of the room: don’t 👏 stick 👏signs 👏 on 👏 poles. It’s extremely dangerous to the sign-nailer, affects power to the community, is not the best use of our resources, and the nails left behind can lacerate our crews when they’re climbing poles in the middle of the night after a storm. Seriously...just don't do it.

People responsible for attaching unauthorised signage can face penalties under the Electricity Act 1994 (section 230, if you’re particularly keen 🧐), and we also have avenues to follow up with those responsible. A bare power pole is a safe pole.

Stay safe around battery charged devices by following these handy tips!

🔌 Always use the correct charger for the product - never mix and match batteries and battery chargers!

🔌 Only use chargers that meet Australian safety standards

🔌 Charge batteries on hard surfaces with a clear space around them to allow heat to dissipate.

🔌 Keep chargers and batteries clear of combustible material while charging (e.g. not on bedding or the couch)

🔌 Let your batteries cool down before re-charging.

🔌 Unless the manufacturer’s instructions say the battery is designed for continuous connection to the charger, always make sure you unplug your charger once it’s finished charging.

Electricity and water do not mix! ❌

Always take extra care when you’re using electrical appliance or equipment near water including in the bathroom, laundry or kitchen, or near a swimming pool, pond, water feature, creek or dam.

A few handy tips to keep you and your family safe:
💧 Ensure the electrical circuit supplying the equipment has a safety switch or connect via a portable safety switch.
💧 Make sure equipment and appliances not designed to operate in water cannot fall or slide into the water.
💧 Mains operated fixed equipment like pool pumps, lights and fixed appliances for use in or around water must be correctly installed according to manufacturer’s instructions and the Wiring Rules.
💧 All equipment used must be suitable for the purpose and operated and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
💧 Submersible pumps used in swimming pools when people are in the pool must be rated no greater than 12V. Other portable pumps for cleaning or maintenance of swimming pools (not for use when people are in the water) must be either 240V earthed type or extra low voltage (rated less than 50 volts) with weatherproof rating IPX7 marked on the pump.
💧 Keep extension leads and cords out of the water.

⚠Safety tip⚠

Never overload power points by plugging in multiple double adapters. If you need more power outlets, get a licensed electrician to install more power points or use a power board with an inbuilt overload device.

Electrical safety is always serious business, especially during a storm. To keep everyone safe, ALWAYS remember the below when cleaning up after floods. You must have hard-wired electrical equipment that’s been in flood water inspected by a licensed electrician before you allow workers to use it.

🔦 Report fallen, low or damaged powerlines to the emergency services or your local electricity distribution entity and stay away from them.
o Ergon Energy on 13 16 70
o Energex on 13 19 62
o Essential Energy on 13 23 91
🔦 Stay away from inundated electrical signs, street lights, and electrical cables.
🔦 Stay away and don’t touch switchboards if they are damaged by water.
🔦 If you have a solar power generating system, avoid getting on the roof unless absolutely necessary and keep away from solar panels and their cables.
🔦 Portable generators should only be used to power essential equipment, such as fridges. Generators can only be connected to your house using a professionally installed generator change-over switch and appropriate socket. Do not connect your generator to your house using a power point on a power circuit or any other connection point. This is very dangerous to you, your neighbours and electrical workers. Only run the generator outdoors or in a well-ventilated area to avoid suffocation from carbon monoxide.
🔦 If rain has got into your ceiling space, you must turn off the main power switch in the switchbox before you head up for a look at the damage. Water and electricity are a very dangerous combination!
🔦 Dispose of or have a licensed electrician repair water-affected electrical appliances, such as PCs, kettles, monitors and fridges.
🔦 Have a licensed electrician check all water-damaged hard-wired electrical appliances, such as air-conditioning units or stoves, intended for re-use before the power supply is reconnected.

Don’t do your own electrical work - it's illegal and dangerous. Always use a licensed electrician.
